Glucosamine reaction?? A few days ago I started my 3 girls on a glucosamine supplements on their food. No problems. Today I decided to give it to Nikki. I don't know it if is from that or something else, but immediately after eating he started vomiting. He has thrown up 6-7 times. At first it was his food, now it is all mucousy. I will take him in if he doesn't stop soon. I was just wondering if anyone knows if glucosamine could cause this reaction? Thanks |
Yes, glucosamine can cause GI upsets in some. I hope Nikki feels better soon. |

Thanks. He hasn't thrown up since and seems ok. I will not give it to him again. If he throws up tonight when I feed him again, I will get him in to my vet. |
If he's having trouble breathing, take him to the vet right away. Yes, some don't handle it well. It's also recommended to start them on a double dose for the first 2 weeks or so. My dog refused his food. So I ground up the tabs and started adding a small amount (1/8 tsp) at each feeding. I'll increase it slowly so his body and taste buds can adjust. From: Glucosamine & Chondroitin for Hip Dysplasia & Arthritis in Dogs Glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl) and glucosamine sulfate both work equally well in dogs. The sulfate form was originally used in Europe. The HCl form has recently become more popular because it is purer and provides more available glucosamine per unit weight and contains much less residual ash. Most is derived from shells and shark/whale or bovine cartilage. Does he have allergies to seafood? The article said too some will vomit, but just decrease the amount given. Also look at different manufacturers, as they may have different inert ingredients, if a lesser amount bothers him too. Just saw your post... yes I would skip tonight get a meal or two in him, and try in a day or two but add a much smaller amount. Maybe he can build up a tolerance to it. |

Aw! I didn't realize he was found on the street! Poor baby! Yeah, I agree, at his age, with no evident problems, I wouldn't force the stuff on him. But with my older guy I'm suspecting possible CT, need to get the vet to look closer... so may be important that I get some into him. He hates pills and chewables, so once I ground it up and sprinkled it on his food, a smaller amount, he did okay. I think it's kind of rich tasting, it has a strong smell to it. we'll see.... |
