Sick Yorkie after huge move :( Hey everyone... So this past week, I drove my dog across 3 states, into a new home, took his best friend (my cat) away from him to a new home, and now I've also begun crate training him. But since then he's been sick. Vomiting on and off, and having diarrhea. Sometimes there is blood in it, sometimes it is just regular diarrhea. The blood in his stool worries me, but perhaps the rest is a symptom of a major move? He's also been licking his back paw INSISTENTLY. He's even licked the hair off of it! I don't see anything wrong with it...not swollen or anything, I dont see any bites, nothing... it's very strange :( I don't have a lot of money, but does all of this sound like he needs a trip to the vet? :( |
It sounds to me like he's gotten himself all worked up over the move. If it were ME, I would take him to the vet because these little ones can go down hill and dehydrate so very quickly. I'm saving for a wedding and don't have a lot of money either, but the theory I use is... would I rather have some debt now or be without my baby...? Sorry to give you the bad news but I would take him in as soon as you can. :( Good luck and keep us updated! I'll keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers! Oh and also try a teaspoon of organic canned pumpkin. Not pumpkin pie mix, but regular pumkin... that will help settle his little tummy. :) |
Oooh Organic Pumpkin eh? Ok. :) Thank you I will try that. -sigh- guess I outta get him to the vet asap. |
Yeah, Bailey has Chronic Pancreatitis and IBD and whenever he starts throwing up or his stool looks just a little loose I give him the pumpkin. I even give it to him when he gets upset or nervous just incase. It's a miracle worker!!!! :) |
poor baby, it sounds like he is just a wreck from the move but it could be something els. Could he of gotten into anything with packing and moving? I know Pixie is a snail she bottom feeds and if there is something to get into she will find it. Being so small I would have him checked out by the vet. prayers that he is ok;) |
I don't think he's gotten into anything :( I'm hoping it's just the move. He's still eating/ drinking/ somewhat playful, but I def notice some depression in him (probably the move). I'm trying to give him as much attention as possible... I may keep my eye on him over the weekend and see if this stops or gets any better for him, if not by monday, take him to the vet, and in the meantime...some organic pumpkin! |
We've also , on TOP of the move, begun crate training him, which has him VERY upset :( |
the pumpkin will help and i can bet a lot of it has to do with the move (although i'm not a vet). plus when dogs are nervous they lick themselves (sometimes)... :) |
another thing to watch is your baby's gums... make sure they stay nice and pink. if they start getting white at all before Monday, get him to a vet sooner... :) |

I responded to your other thread in the training section. How much time during the day is your little guy spending in the crate? I suggested trying an xpen or small room with an easy to clean floor. Crating could be stressing him out and causing health problems. I know that if I tried to crate my oldest boy who was never trained to use a closed door crate, he would probably have a nervous breakdown. |
I actually have an X-pen. I will set it back up and see if that helps him out. He does seem extremely stressed. |

Try to keep a positive, upbeat, predictable demeanor around him. Dogs respond to their human's moods and behavior. I'm sure you are busy and excited with your big move and changes in your life. It's a big job reassuring your dog so that he does not make himself sick with anxiety. |
I don't have any advice on the tummy troubles. But I'm sure the licking is due to the move. I had a mini daschund that did the same thing to his paw while we were moving. We had to stay with my mom for a few weeks because we sold our place before our new place was ready. Anyway he licked his paw incessantly until it became huge and swollen. THe vet prescribed some antibiotics and he had to wear a collar. I do hope the pumpkin helps and your baby gets to feeling better. Leslie |
Thanks everyone. I will update how it goes. I'm going to try to wrap his foot so that he stops licking his paw before it gets infected!!! |

sounds like stress colitis and whole intestinal tract is inflamed. I am sure the move was the cause of it :( You can soak the kibble if feeding hard food to make it easier to digest as that will help |
