Medial Luxating Patella Okay so this little guy apparently has this. I guess my vet will have to explain it to me. I see no hitch in his gait, but he does lay down like an old men. What do I need to know...and how can I make it easier for him. I am getting a ramp to get on the couch because If I don't he tries to jump. It is a little high so I will take that away as a problem. |
would love some pointers to information Please |
My Pixie was just diagnosed with this and had surgery last wednesday. It is where there knee pops in and out of the groove. They grade them Grade 1-4 with 4 being the worst. It is pretty common in small breed dogs. One of mine has grade 4 and it doesn't seem to bother her so we opted not to do surgery. Pixie's came on suddenly and she was having trouble walking so we did the surgery. I am starting to think I should have waited to see if it got better with rest. The surgery is very rough on them and they need to be confined to a crate for 6 weeks. It is also very expensive. It's best to not let them jump on and off furniture, don't let them get overweight and give them glucosamine supplements. I hope your little one can avoid surgery. |
Uni was diagnosed with grade 3 last summer. I have had her on Cosequin ever since, and she has not lifted her leg once. Now giving supplements does not make the LP go away. It just helps lubricate the joints. If you dog is developing lameness then you need to have him seen by a specialist. However, like Patti said, many dogs have this disorder and life long normal lives without having surgery. How old is your little one and when was he diagnosed? It's also best to keep weight under control as too much weight on their frame is harder on the knees. Take a look at this site, maybe will help to explain a bit better for you: OFA: Patellar Luxation |
