i'll try to be more explanatory now i just wanted you to stop panicing shes ok there isnt anything you need to do for her its natural if you are worried she can and most likely will get blood on the carpet so be prepared this is what happens when you have a female dog that is not spayed this will happen every month until you get her spayed. do not let her out to go potty alone it take seconds for another dog to jump the fence and get her pregnant do not let her nere any other male dog as like i said it takes seconds you can give her a bath if you like but you dont HAVE to. shes gonna be just fine relax and get her spayed |

yes it like a period but we dont refer to it as that it is a heat cycle I feel like i can not stress enough that she can not be left alone outside for even the blink of an eye. she is not in any pain they can get pregnant LONG after the bleeding stops and the swelling goes down so please be careful |
call her vet and see if you can get the spay appt. moved up if your other dog did by chance get her pregnant they will abort the puppys during the spay. tell your vet that she has gone into her first heat and your concerned she might get pregnant since you have a male in the house. while your at it get him neutered to. seperate them now and dont let them be together until her spay |

yes you can but some vets may charge more because it may cause more bleeding like i said if she is pregnant getting her spayed now will abort the puppies |

there is no way to big when it comes to dogs breeding they will find a way if given the time there are all sorta of mixes im sure a poodle is bigger then your s**tzu and there are tons of yorkie poos males will go to ANY extreame to get to a female in heat so a simple pet gate may not be the best effort |
maybe this will be helpful The average heat cycle for a dog is approximately 3 weeks and since this an an average, some heats are shorter (as little as 7-10 days), others are longer (4 weeks or more). Average times between heat periods is seven months but some dogs can cycle as early as every 4 months, some once a year. Lengths of heat cycles and intervals between cycles are different for each dog but most dogs hit somewhere close to the averages. The first part of heat you will notice bleeding from the vulva, swelling of the vulva, possible increase in urination and the most noticeable, male dogs hanging around the house. During this period (proestrus), females will not allow the males to breed with them although the males will be very persistent. The second part or estrus is the time in which the female will allow the male to breed her and this can last anywhere from 4-21 days. A female, most of the time, will allow most any male to breed during this time. As the female starts to go out of heat or enter diestrus, she will be less willing to breed. Again this stage can last 4-14 days but averages approximately 7 days. The next cycle usually begins about 7 months from the start of the last heat cycle, not the end of that cycle but again this varies from dog to dog. The interval stays the same even if she becomes pregnant. If you do not intend to breed her, you really should consider spaying her. There are many health benefits associated with spaying such as decreased chance of mammary tumors and you will not have to worry about pyometra, metritis or unwanted litters (overpopulation is a big problem - just take a trip to a humane shelter). If you elect to spay her, this can be done during heat but it may be best to wait until the heat cycle is over to decrease the chance of complications. Mike Richards, DVM |

She can't get pregnant at this stage of her heat. Keep them apart. Diapers and belly bands are not enough protection. Crating one is not enough protection b/c they can just do it through the bars. Spaying is best not done during heat. It is a bit riskier. |
You can get doggy diapers at Petco so she will not make a mess from the discharge. Please do be careful not to put her with your male as it only takes a minute for them to hook up and the shelters are full of mixed breed dogs that need homes . You would not want to add to it. Also the doggy diaper Will Not keep your male dog from mating with her so don't try to use it as a form of birth control. |
Just a thought, but why don't you take your male in and have him neutered today or tomorrow before you do have a problem on your hands? |
It does NOT matter if the male is much larger then your female it is actually more dangerous~! Please do not ever leave them together. Not for one minute since that is all it will take for them to tie. Beside the fact that she is small she is also way too young to have a litter of puppies. I cannot stress to you how important of an issue this is~if it were me I would see if I could have your male neutered ASAP and also take her to a friends for a little vacation until the risk of pregnancy has passed for her. There have been so many accidental breeding and the results are just frightening! Like it has already been said, doggie diapers and belly bands are NOT dog condons and should never be used for this purpose. Crates are not safe either~they will try to do what nature is telling them to do when the timing is right. Please make sure you take this VERY SERIOUSLY and be proactive so that you do not end up needing to be reactive when they do tie. |

Good point. It sounds like the absolute BEST option for her right now would be to completely separate the dogs. Not by putting them in different rooms, not diapers, not crates. To the OP: Do you have a friend or relative who can take your male until her heat cycle is over? |

Getting him completely out of the house is the only way to absolutely prevent pregnancy. |
