He ate a bone! Help, please. After I ate a smoked rib, I let my little guy chew the bone for a minute. I walked across the room to get a treat to trade for the bone, and when I returned the bone was GONE! What do I do? It was about the size of a woman's pointer finger. |
You should never give your dog any cooked bones. Aside from having too much salt/spices, possibly fat on it, once cooked they become brittle and can splinter in their bodies. Chicken bones are the worst. Raw bones are ok though. I'd call the vet. I've never had it happen to me, but i would be very worried if it did. |
Do I need to call NOW? It is 120 mile round trip to an emergency vet. Should I go now, or is this something that can wait until morning? I never thought about him EATING the bone. I thought he would just lick and chew it for a minute and I would take it away from him. I'm scared to death. |
Thank you In my worry, I forgot to thank you for taking time to reply. He's never had a bone before and he's 8 years old. |

I think you can wait to see if he poops it out. any signd that he has an obstruction , he needs to be see asap. My Suzi has gotten into s chicken bone twice beforeand was fine, thankfully , but I observed her very closely for few days . this is very scary, but ofyen times they are ok. the thinf that I sm worried about is that this bone was big. call the ER vet and see what they say for your peace of mind. |
He acts fine I see nothing in his behavior that is not normal. We had our evening walk around the yard and he's resting on my lap. He had his regular canned food about an hour afterward. I gave him a 1/2 teaspoon of oil, thinking it might help move the bone through. It happened so fast that I don't know if he chewed or swallowed it whole. It's almost midnight here. |
my only concern is you are so far away from ER :( Give them a call The things to watch for are vomitting blood or blood in stool but you being so far away has me concerned but ER should be able to guide you better If you were closer i would say just keep an eye on him Is he choking or anything like that or gagging? |
It's been about 4 hours He hasn't coughed or gagged or anything. I honestly have looked all over not believing he could eat it so fast. It was an end bone and seemed a bit soft. He might actually have chewed it up. |

Yeah I would at least just call and talk with them to see what they say. Better safe than sorry. And if it were me, I wouldn't be doing that long drive either if he was acting fine, but I WOULD be calling them. |

How is your baby? My Westie got into some chicken bones in the garbage and we didn't see the results until a day or two later . . . terrible bloody stool. He ended up with a x ray to make sure all bone fragments were gone; an antibiotic; and a prescription food to help calm his intestines that were inflamed. He was fine but we did have to give him the special food for a couple of weeks. I hope you find out your little one is fine. |
hoping this little one is ok today :) |
