advice on excercising after FHO.... Hello again. Cooper got his stitches out yesterday. The pathology of the bone showed a genetic condition, there was no sign of trauma. I'm looking for suggestions to get him using this leg more. He's still carrying it quite a bit. I will say this, he seems to feel SO much better! He's happier and more playful. The vet said to move his leg back and forth to improve the range of motion. I've done this daily, for about 10-15 minutes a day. He also said to let him swim. We don't have a pool and the tub is too shallow to do this. He also said that after a few months if he doesn't start walking on it all the time they can force him to by binding his good leg, I'd rather it not come to that. Any suggestions from those of you who've been through this? Thanks and have a great day. :) |
You could get a small air mattress...enough air in it so that he will sink in when walking. Then, get him to walk back and forth. It will help to build muscle in that leg. It is hard for them to hold the leg up on an air mattress. They usually go through this...they are so used to not using the leg that it takes a while for them to realize there is no more pain and the leg can be used. |
Here are some links I just found that might be helpful: Adamson Veterinary Services / POST FHO SURGERY (FEMORAL HEAD REMOVAL) REHAB PROG |
Thank you so much! |
I watched the video's and I think I should be doing more stretching. I do have an air mattress and I will try that tomorrow. Thanks again! :) |

Let us know how things are going! :) I just thought of another one the physical therapist suggested. Do a limbo type pole and coax him to walk under it....having him squat a bit. |
