Neuter and running a fever...
 
Hi,
My 6 month old puppy was neuter yesterday. She is doing well under the circumstances; however, I believe she is having a fever (dry nose, hot ears and stomach). Is there anything that I can give her to lower her temperature?

I would call the vet before giving any meds... a fever after surgery could be a sign of infection.

dogs normal temp is higher then ours so they will feel hotter to us. especially with a naked belly. do you have a thermometer you can rectally use to take her temp (making sure to lube it up)? normal temp is 101-102 ish

do you know what kind of seutures they used on her!? Sometimes if they use skin glue, it can cause a reaction, but I agree, she may have an infection, or could be allergic to the stiches they used....call your vet! Good luck!!!!!!

I went ahead and checked her temperature. She had a temp of 102.5 so I went ahead and called her vet. At the office, they told me to check her temp again in an hour and if it was higher to take her to the office. Thankfully, I did not have to, I checked her temp twice yesterday and both times were whitin normal limits. BTW, thanks so much for the helpful advice!

They used stitches on her. I will need to take her back to the vet in 14 days for them to be removed. The site of her incision looks pretty good but I was wondering if there is any pet ointment that I can put on it to prevent infection. Do any of you know of any?

Applying ointment on the incision is not recommended or necessary. You want the area to dry. Ointment only keeps it wet.

By the way your girl was not nuetered she was spayed.

Ok, you need to make sure that you keep that incision site clean and dry. I wouldnt suggest putting anything on it, but if it does look red and irriated you can put just a dap of neosporin on it. ( I was a vet tech for 7 years) Im surprised they are waiting 14 days rather than 7 days. Make sure you are leash walking for the next week, and try to keep her low key. Sometimes with all the pain meds they give you, it will make them feel so good that they forget they had surgery, so try to keep her from jumping!

Are males the ones that get neuter? First dog for me, kind of unfamiliar with all the terminology :p

It's her third day since the proccedure and she is pretty much back to her normal self. She wants to run and jump and all of the usual puppy things. The vet recommended giving her Benadryl if she was too hyper. I'm not too sure if that's a good idea. I bought it but I don't know if I should give her some... :confused:

Children's Benadryl is fine. You need to keep her from running and jumping, she can open up the sutures with too much strenious activity. Activity should be kept to a minimum. Did your vet provide pain meds? They usually don't need it past the first couple of days. But, vets usually ask you to give it to keep activity down.

Yep! Boys are nuetered and girls are spayed.
