Post LP surgery My dog Rico had LP surgery 5 weeks ago. He uses his leg about 80% of the time, but not full pressure on it when he does. For those of you who have gone thru this, how long did it take for your dog to use the operated leg 100%? |
I would like to know too. My little guy may need this surgery at some time. Maybe your vet could let you know if he is doing as well as he should be. I hope is will be back to 100% soon. Hugs. |
It will be a few months before your baby will be close to 100%. Did your surgeon talk to you about any type of physical therapy? or did he talk about supplements? Hot Rod had his surgery a year ago the end of March and from time to time, he still picks his leg up. At each of his vet vists I have them look at his knee and it is a tight as it can be. :) One of the my regular vets told me that it can take up to a year for recovery. I would think for sure that after 6 weeks your surgeon/vet would have you doing some type of physical therapy. We were able to do water therapy for Hot Rod at 5 weeks. Best of luck to the both of you. Hugs. |
We just got ours back from LP. It could take 6 months or longer for full recovery. |
Yes he is on supplements, but the surgeon said physical therapy was not necessary, that just his normal day to day activities would be enough. He has been operating for more than thirty years and he said physical therapy was not done years ago, and dogs did just fine, so idk?? I have a recheck appt next week. |

I would say that it certainly cannot hurt to do some as it will help to get him using his leg more and aid in keeping the leg agile. I wouldn't over do it but just a little at a time. There has been so much advances and changes in medicine so what may have been the procdure 30 years ago, may not necesarily the most effectively today. But you should do what you and your surgeon are comfortable with. I'm certainly not trying to contradict a vet. :) |
I will ask about the water therapy. Where did you bring Hot Rod to get it done? Also, did your surgeon do any xrays after the operation? |
