Help Just found a tick
 

Ok well I was washing my dog and found a Engorged American Dog Tick Nymphs on him...I got it off, but need to know what to do?? I am going to go to the ver tomorrow..But has anyone had any experience on this. The spot is a little bit poofy..Do these ticks lay the eggs inside of the dogs? Please Help!! Thanks:confused:

Sorry, I do not know anything about ticks but hopefully someone with experience will see this soon. You could try calling an ER vet and see if they can give you some information.

Thank Patti..I have been reading its more deadly to me...And I kept it in a ziploc for tomorrows doctor visit..I also just put the Frontline topical on him and it says it kills all Larvae...ETC..I dont like the reaction he gets from that stuff..But after this experience I had to..He is not happy right now! :(

I don't think they lay eggs 'inside' of the dog. If I'm not mistaken, the biggest risk is that the tick infects the dog's bloodstream.

Did you get the head of the tick and how did you dispose of the little critter? I removed one (not engorged) from under my dog's eye last week and put it down the sink drain. The darn thing crawled out of the sink. I read later that I should have killed it with some rubbing alcohol.

Check with your vet's office for more information.

ETA: I just read that you have it in a ziplock. Douse it with rubbing alcohol.

THanks..I put it in a ziploc to bring with me to the doctor..I actually did not know it was a tick and tried at first with my hands..I thought it was a piece of a grape he might of found....I got the entire tick he just plucked right off of him when I used a papertowel..Maybe being in the bath helped get him easily..I need it a alive..I heard those are deadly to humans and if I get a reaction the tick need to be alive in order to check it for some diesease...I am assuming that the Frontline helps kill the larvae ...etc, by what the box says...

When I first found the tick on Max, I didn't know what it was either. I thought it was a crusty booger until I took a closer look. Yuck! Luckily it had not had enough time to start sucking blood.

Glad you got it figured out! I HATE ticks.

But, we never go to the vet after finding one. Ticks are fairly common around here and I give him a check every night before bed to be sure, because it's not uncommon for one to attach itself to him, even tho he's on k9 advantix.

Jackson did get Lymes last year and I'm 99.9% positive it came from a deer tick (those are the little ones ya gotta watch out for...) and when he was on Frontline, he got about 10 within a few weeks. Since starting Advantix, there's only been 1 to my knowledge.

I'm from Minnesota, the tick capital of the world I think. The ticks this year are really bad. If you stand in a grassy place you can see them jumping all over the place. First there are two kinds of ticks, the regular tick and the teeny tiny deer tick. The deer tick is the dangerous one. Start with regular ticks as you see them most. I bought a little plastic spoon tick remover from Foster and Smith. It has a little split in it and you slide it under the tick and pop the tick off. Make sure the tick has some hair or skin in it's mouth as then you know you've got the head. It almost always comes out with the body. Otherwise cover the spot with vaseline and it will die. After I remove a tick I rub the spot with rubbing alcohol and you don't need to do anything else. They may leave a small bump there but that's okay. I have a tweezer with my spoon and grab the tick with it and burn it with a match. They are hard to kill otherwise. The deer tick is really hard to find but they aren't around as much. They need to be attached for 48 hours before they cause lymes disease. If you should find one, take it to the vet to verify. They can test your puppy for lymes and they also have shots now to prevent it. Belle gets one with her annual shots. If you find a tick on yourself or family, remove it the same way. It's probably not a deer tick but watch the area after removal. It will get red and develope a bulls-eye appearance, that indicates lymes or another disease that needs to be treated. If you can't get the tick out, go to the emergency room and have it removed. I worked in the ER for many years and dug out a few ticks. I will not use flea and tick products on Belle or TJ our Lab, they can cause death or other neurological problems. We found a pure citronella spary we use when they go outside in the grass. Also when they come in, brush over them to remove any that may have jumped on. If you have any more questions let me know. I can also post a picture of the ticks so you can see the sizes. The deer ticks are about as big as a pencil dot.

Wow lots of information..Thank you...I had stopped giving my little one Frontline, and Advantix..He had really bad reactions to them and than I read the article of some dogs that passed away from the reactions. But after finding the tick, I applied the Frontline and his reactions changed..INstead of lasting 24 FULL hours...His reaction only lasted 12 Hours...Maybe its b/c he is now just under 5lbs..Where as when I got him he was 1.9lbs...So I am hoping that this is the case...I still need to look into the organic way I can treat him..I tried a colllar..But He reacted the same way as the others and looked at me as if I was crazy...lol...So the adventure continues...But No matter what My Little Buddie and Me love every day of the adventure!

Excellent information. We use a flea/tick comb after he comes inside. It is really hard to be sure there are no ticks because like you said they are very small. We bought the spoon tick remover you mentioned.
