hahaha poor little thing. he has it rough. he got rid of the shunt and stones so he feels better and wants to play probably for the first time in a while and he can't because he needs to be restricted. :( its for his own good though. a little more rest and he'll be as good as new :)

what if you put him in a room with the tv or radio on loud enough to block other noises. then pretend to leave. get your keys and purse, and open and close the door. do everything louder then you normally would so he can hear that and then be really quiet. LOL

His swelling has gone down even more. He is way more comfortable too. Still watching his urine. There is no blood, he's still dribbling rather than a steady stream. Most of his squats produce a decent sized puddle. Thank you for asking. :)

Update on Oscar....He started having trouble peeing again. It ended up that the surgeon had left behind 2 stones! He had surgery again last Tuesday. He did fine. The day he came home, he was peeing normally and has been since. My poor little guy has been through so much. I feel so bad for him.

aw that's horrible that he had to have surgery again. did the vet not take a post op x-ray after the first surgery to make sure he got them all out?

I'm not sure. Maybe they weren't visible because in order to see them on the x-ray this second time, he had to use dye.

hmmm, wonder if the stones weren't in the bladder but in the urethra instead. usually during the surgery a catheter is passed into the penis and its flushed so that anything possibly stuck will flow into the bladder to be removed with the rest of the stones.

when i've used dye for bladder x-rays it was usually to see if there was a tear in the urethra.

did you have to pay for the second surgery?

OMG he missed some stones -ughhhhhh I would not be happy :( Poor little guy he has been through so much. I hope this is the last of it for you two :(

exactly I would think you would not have to pay for a second surgery:( I would not be happy about this at all as they should have made sure everything was out of there like Kellie said :( That poor little baby. I sure hope the ameroid constrictor is ok :(

The stone he removed during the original surgery was in the urethra.

Maybe it was air he used for the x-ray. I thought that he said they were going to first use dye, then air....I can't remember. It was such a stressful time.

He did not charge me for the second surgery...but I can't put a measure on the cost of Oscar being in pain for so long. I just hope that everything can be behind us now. I just want Oscar healthy.

I hope the ameroid constrictor is OK also. I am praying that the stones were an isolated incident and that he is a good surgeon.

Oscar seems to be doing well. I don't have much to compare it to because he didn't really show any signs of a liver shunt aside from the stones. I'm hoping he will put on some weight. Should I be noticing some weight gain yet. It has been 3 weeks since the LS surgery.

I think you need to give it more time. Did you join those liver shunt groups as there are other owners that had this surgery and can better help you :)

Glad he did not charge for surgery but still not happy Oscar Man had to go through this a second time - NOT COOL - He is one tough little cookie though :)

I'm glad he didn't charge you for the second surgery. something just isn't sitting well with me about this stone removal surgery. do you have the receipt handy? what surgical procedures are listed? does it have each one listed (cystotomy, castration, PSS)? i'm just wondering if he did a full cystotomy. also wondering if he just flushed it internally by sticking a needle in the bladder and making him pee it out, or put a catheter in his penis and flushed it into the bladder then surgically opened the bladder and removed the stones. if it was the latter then he should have been able to remove everything at that time and confirmed it with an x-ray. granted Oscar did have a lot going on with the surgery and he was probably under for a long time. we don't know what his stats were during and after the procedure so there is also that to consider when thinking about the vets decision on his process.

I am glad you are going to check this out further as this has me very BOTHERED as you know how this stuff upsets me already. I hope you can shed more light on this for her :(

procedures: PSS Extrahepatic, cystoliths, neuter, retained testicles

Then it has some itemized things....
consult exam, hospitalization, in house limited bloodwork, histopathology, Anesthesia, Intravenous catheter setup, intravenous Cefazolin, intra fluid therapy, Pain meds, padded bandage, laser therapy 1, lidocaine incision patch, anesthesia

well that doesn't help much now does it. LOL

cystoliths are the bladder stones themselves, not the method used to remove them.

oh well...

the important thing is that Oscar is doing much better this time around and hopefully will continue to improve.
