quick advise Chloe was chewing on an onion I am always so careful but i had peeled an onion and discarded the remains aas well as a few chunks about the size of a quarter. I was in the living room watching tv when i looked down and somehow she had a piece of the onion,,it was as big as a quarter it was one layer thick and she had chewed it good as small pieces had fallen off..I dont know if i have to rush her to vet or what..please advise |
How much does she weigh? A small piece of onion is not an emergency. |
Shes about 4lbs...im hoping she didnt swallow to much. I think she was just chewing and had just gotten it. but she couldve for all i know..so if she did eat a chunk she wont die? or go into shock you dont think? |
You think Benadryl might help? not sure myself  |
The concern isn't shock. It's hemolytic anemia. A bite isn't going to do that, but I iwll keep looking for the least toxic amount information. |
ASPCA - Virtual Pet Behaviorist Toxic Foods and Plants for Dogs It's not something I'd panic about, but you can call an ER vet for the toxicity level. |
thx Thx i posted here before reading anything, as i knew just from common knowledge onions were poisionis for them, just didnt know side effects and if inducing vomit would help. Nowhere on any of these pages does it suggest any form of what to do other than watch for signs and if any are seen to take to vet for a detox/cleansing care type deal. But ive read a few (6 diferent pages) now including the one you provided and I think the damage is done, and I will have to just take her at first sign of any diarrhea or vomiting..I hope the amount was so small she will be ok. But I will be on the look out thanks for such a quick responce, I appreciate your help so much. |
you can check with er but a vet tech on malt group came home and her hubby was feeding her malts onions  she laughed and said well they will probably have a sick stomach and told him not to ever feed them onion again. I was always afraid of it too but when she posted this she was not too concerned. Heck i fed mine macadamia nuts one time  then I saw it was toxic -ughhh this was before i knew all this stuff and joined groups. |
I think I read somewhere that it's only dangerous if fed over a period of a week or two, as in a cumulative effect. |
Thanks everyone Im feeling the same as you all have mentioned..Most of the stuff im reading talks about multiple incidents. Im going to call my vet tomorrow morn for clarification. I just freaked because I cook with onions a lot..were Italian after all. So Im always Soooo careful. I still have no clue how she got it. But if there's one thing I do know its when there's a yorkie there's a way! lol And It always seems to happen on a sunday or at night..lol |
