Bit of blood on stool
 
On and off for several months, my dog Rico will have just a drop or less of red blood ON the outside of his stool at the beginning. The vet has done blood tests and several rectal exams and checked for parasites and has found nothing. Anyone ever experienced this???

yes my maltese demi had this as well. I had 2 fecals and a fecal culture done. We could not figure out what was going on but it cleared up and no issues since and has been 6 months now. We chalked it up to colitis as they can get blood in stool from that. Dh was gone to visit family a week and that triggered it and then second time it was after groomer came so think it was stress related.

sometimes giardia is hard to detect so ims said to do fecal once every week for 3 weeks to see if it shows up.

Thanks....I noticed in the pic the stool looks less firm at the end, Rico has this too. Is that part of colitis too?

yes usually colitis is a yellow type stool with blood in it but with demi it looked like this so it concerned me but learned they can have blood like this and it be colitis as well. Did you click on link?

Rico' stool looks more like Demi's. The vet wants to put Rico on Science Diet W/D to firm up the stool, because the first half is firm and the rest is too soft.

what are you feeding?

I personally would just do some probiotics mixed with a little pumpkin - it will firm it and clear it up - I use dds plus probiotics from the vitamin shoppe and i mix it with organic canned pumpkin from whole foods - firms stools up quickly and gets rid of any diarrhea issues

I feed the wellness small breed...dry. It has probiotics in it, should I add more? Which one do you use?

i use this - 2 capsules 20-30 min before breakfast in a little pumpkin. Demi cleared up quick so do not give it to her but have been using for dee dee for a couple years as she has alot of allergy issues and keeps bad bacteria down in her body. If she gets a bout of diarrhea i double it up 2 in am and 2 in pm and clears immediately

Did you feed Rico any people food, sometimes high fat or fat in people food will cause this in the stool.
Fenmore grabbed a piece of spam that fell on the floor and inhaled it. The next day his poo was jellylike and had blood in it. The vet said was the spam that caused it, he gave him some albon and he was fine.

Nothing ever fatty...just very little plain white meat chicken breast on top of his kibble.

interesting as i was feeding demi the same way so maybe it is the chicken. I would put baked organic chicken and put it on her food but i stopped it and now put a little cod instead. Maybe that is the cause of it.

My demi is a picky eater and will not just eat her kibble :( she just lays there until we put something on it then she runs over and eats it - little stinker

Rico is the same way!!! I have to put something tasty on his kibble or he will just look at me as if to say, "do you really expect me to eat THAT"...it's so funny and frustrating at the same time!

yep she will lay in the room forever too and will not touch it drives me nuts. I feed all three of mine different diets as my yorks have health issues. My yorks are piggies but her she will just lay there not touching her food for an hour so the only way she will eat is if we put a little something on it. I just put a couple sprinkles of cod and she goes nuts - crazy girl i tell ya - here she is the princess

I know what you mean, he drives me crazy!! One day, I said I'm not going to put anything extra on his food. I offered him his kibble several times during the day, of course he wouldn't touch it!!! Finally, it was 10pm and I couldn't stand it anymore, so I put some chicken on top and he gobbled it all!!!
