12 Year old Yorkie Stroke This is my first post, and I wish I had found this site under better circumstances. My Yorkie is named Stoli, she is 4lbs, 12 years old and before this weekend has never had a health problem. Stoli and I are remarkably close, before I met her I wasn't a dog person at all and before she met me Stoli was not a people person and hated to be petted or held. This Sunday while I was not at home Stoli had a stroke. Essentially my girlfriend's dog Colby, a 70 llb Katrina dog, tried to take half of a greenie away from Stoli. Stoli responded by freaking out and barking at him like crazy. My girlfriend separated the dogs and when she came back to where Stoli was, Stoli was on her back with her limbs shaking. Stoli’s pupils were two different sizes (Aniscornia) and her eyes were darting horizontally unable to focus. My girlfriend immediately took Stoli to the emergency Vet thinking she had a seizure. When I got there she was on diazepam and was really out of it. Seeing her out of it and her eyes the way they were really freaked me out. Later on, I was able to calm down and visit her again. She definitely was responding to my voice and trying to follow me around the room with her head. She would try to stand up but obviously couldn’t keep her balance and would immediately fall back down. The next morning, Monday, the emergency vet suggested we transfer her to an animal hospital near by that specializes in neurological problems. By this time I had done a significant amount of research and was optimistic that Stoli was suffering from Geriatric Idiopathic Vestibular Disease. The neurologist was pretty confident in this diagnosis too and when I visited Stoli that evening the Aniscornia was gone and her eye movements were almost imperceptible. Stoli was drinking water on her own and very interested when they gave her baby food. She was able to eat without throwing up. I was very optimistic. On Tuesday (~48 hrs in), Stoli was still unable to stand on her own so the doctor ordered an MRI. The MRI revealed a “relatively small stroke”. He then performed an ultrasound to rule out tumors on the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland was “very slightly enlarged” and they detected a slight mass on her spleen. The doctor said he didn’t think there was anything wrong with adrenal gland and the mass on the spleen was unrelated but would need to be monitored going forward. The doctor says she can come home as soon as she is able to stand on her own and the rolling stops. Has anyone had any experiences with strokes that they could share with me? Did your dog have similar symptoms? How long before your dog was able to stand on move on it’s on. Any information is really appreciated as I am beyond freaked out by this experience. Stoli is my first dog. |
Ahhh...poor baby...She sounds just darling :) I am really sorry that I can't offer too much experience. I did know a dog who was 2 y/o and had a stroke. He was paralyzed for a while. The owners did accupucnture and water theraphy. They did rehab him to a point that he could walk again, but obviously not like he was before the stroke. Have you looked at the Yahoo Groups yet? You might find some other pet owners that have more experience as well. Welcome to YT ;) P.S. Greenie aren't 100% digestible, so alot of us here avoid them :D |
Aww, so sorry you and stoli are going through this. My friend's s**tzu had a stroke a few months ago. it took a couple months for him to get his strength back without tipping over, but today you'd never know he ever had one (he's 10 years old.) Lots of prayers for you and Stoli. |
I am so sorry you and your baby are going thru this. I hope you can get some answers. |
I have no idea, but I am pulling for you and your dog. They are tough little things, and it sounds as if she is getting better. Hang in there. |
Welcome to YT. I'm sending out prayers for Stoli to make a full recovery. |
Welcome. I am sorry to hear about Stoli. I hope she can come home soon. |
Hi Everyone Thanks so much for the information and support. I really appreciate it. I saw Stoli last night and was able to meet the neurologist and look at the MRI. She had a very small and centralized stroke in her Cerebellum. The bad news is its going to take a long time for her balance issues to clear up. The good news is that her personality, thinking ability and the use of her limbs shouldn’t have been affected. The only worry is that the doctor can’t find an underlying cause of the stroke, but so long as she doesn’t have another one the prognosis is great. Best of all, the hospital called earlier, and the rolling has stopped and she was able to stand on her own this morning (For five seconds, but still!). This means she comes home tomorrow morning! Thanks again for everything. Here are some pics of Stoli. <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/4gViq6JVU7eV5IkCcvcrjolDdyJdMziTWdoar3jxmvw?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fX-fjHwGknY/S_PvVcVfyvI/AAAAAAAAAEU/DTO1zU85_pQ/s144/DSC02871.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/jsmithaij/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCLvwmIXjlePTMA&feat=embedweb site">Drop Box</a></td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/YkghA6qWUq8PKUDke8Qn2IlDdyJdMziTWdoar3jxmvw?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fX-fjHwGknY/S_PusyzMKXI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/J6jP2GCnKuM/s144/DSC02892.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/jsmithaij/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCLvwmIXjlePTMA&feat=embedweb site">Drop Box</a></td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/IuDQtju3KLiGKqZK7q08r4lDdyJdMziTWdoar3jxmvw?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_fX-fjHwGknY/S_PtyNCi-EI/AAAAAAAAAEM/QPrtHm0GLsI/s144/2009-12-03%2020.58.19.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/jsmithaij/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCLvwmIXjlePTMA&feat=embedweb site">Drop Box</a></td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/jdrcBSM1QmltVggggu0ASIlDdyJdMziTWdoar3jxmvw?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fX-fjHwGknY/S_PxB3WgF_I/AAAAAAAAAEY/A6yO0f2IWI8/s144/DSC02620.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/jsmithaij/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCLvwmIXjlePTMA&feat=embedweb site">Drop Box</a></td></tr></table> |
I tried to post earlier but I think I may have messed up when I tried to embed a few pictures of Stoli. So here is just the update. I will upload a few pics when I can resize them. Thanks so much for the information and support. I really appreciate it. I saw Stoli last night and was able to meet the neurologist and look at the MRI. That's great news, you must be thrilled to be bringing her home. Have a quick recovery Stoli:) |
Welcome to YT and I'm so sorry to hear about Stoli. I have nothing to offer in terms of experience or suggestions and it sounds like you already have gotten good answers and a decent prognosis. The road ahead after illnesses for these little guys is never easy and we will keep you and Stoli in our thoughts. I hope she is back to herself in no time! |
Thanks everyone! Stoli came home last night and we are shocked by how well she has adapted to being home. She has already done a little bit of walking, so we are very optimistic about a full recovery. I guess the lesson is to never be overwhelmed by how bad they look after an event like a stroke and a seizure and to just get them good care and think positive! Thanks again for everyone's support! |
