puppy with coccidia-DESPERATE My travis was diagnosed with coccidia on thursday and started on Albon... early this morning i thought everything was going good poop seemed normal, but he stopped eating, took advice of giving him nutri cal for puppies, this got him to eat, but right after he ate he started with the diareah again. there is blood in his stool. Is this normal if he is on the Albon. How long does it take for this medicine to work? I have already missed 2 days of work and money has run out to take him back to the vet. he won't eat the chicken rice mixture anymore is there anything else i can try. He is very small , less than 2lbs at 3 1/2 months old. I was also told to go around with bleach after he goes to the bathroom, but i read that, that is poisoness to dogs. I have it diluted will this hurt him if he licks the floor?:( |
I am no vet, but have been to one many times LOL. Im wondering if your pup has Giardia also. You could get some Safeguard dewormer and worm him for 5-6 days. If it is giardia this should clear that up, if not he will at least be wormed. But again I am no vet. Look it up on the internet though. Type in Fenbendazole for treating Giardia in your search engine. Theres a lot of useful info out there on this stuff. |
You could try him on Gerber's chicken baby food. It is also very bland and is good to use in a pinch. You only need a 5% bleach solution to kill just about anything. Bleach dries to a harmless salt compound, so as long as the area is dry it shouldn't bother him. Personally, I wouldn't treat him with anything else at this time. Sometimes you will see blood in their poop if their digestive tract is stressed. Your vet should be willing to discuss this with you on the phone, and make recommendations for any treatment adjustments he may deem necessary. |

Like I said in my original post I am not a vet. But Safeguard is pretty safe so I am going to assume there is another reason those pups may have died |

I would run, not walk to the vet! My Chihuahua had Coccidia when we got her and was put on meds for it and did fine. She was also full of worms but always ate and she was only 5 weeks old. I syringed fed her puppy milk for over three weeks every two hours( would not take a bottle) and she is now 11/2 years old. Please seek the help of your vet! |
Well since the puppy had only 2 treatments at the time you posted it probably had not gotten rid of it. Treatment is usually 5 to 7 days in most cases and you will often still see the signs of it, i.e. bloody diarrhea. It is also possible that a puppy can have both coccidia and giardia so testing for both is important. Here is a place to read about it and the treatment, please read the whole page. COCCIDIOSIS: DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, AND PREVENTION Canine Coccidia I hope by now your puppy is doing better and that is why you haven't been back. :) |

I almost lost Pennie to Giardia! So I DO KNOW how bad it can get. But it and coccidia can be hard to diagnose. They have to be shedding the little nasties at the time of the test. That is why we didn't know Pennie had it until 4 weeks after we got her. She had no loose or bloody stool or vomiting. I spent almost $1,000.00 on tests alone trying to find out why Pennie was so sick. It was on the 2nd giardia test that it was found. Shew as sick, very very sick for 5 weeks!!!! After the 5 day treatment she had done a complete 180 and has been healthy ever since. I spent 5 weeks force feeding this puppy starting the 2nd day we had her. At 14 weeks she was 1.6 pounds, she is now 5 pounds at 7 months. We thought she was going to end up tiny but thank God she is healthy and all terrier now;) So she lived with it for 5 weeks, so it does not kill fast like Parvo. The post I was replying to most of the litter and the mom died very quickly after being de-wormed, this is why I believe it was parvo and the reason for my reply. |
Travis UPDATE Hello and thanks to everyone for their support, Travis is doing GREAT! Back to his rascally little self. I guess it is natural to worry about your babies when they are so little. Thank you again;) |
