is nuetering safe for tiny yorkies My little Travis is 3 1/2 months old and only weights 1lb 13oz. The vet said i should get him nuetured at 5 months buy i don't think he's gonna be much bigger by then. The breeder I purchased him from said he will only get to be about 3 to 4 pounds. Is this safe for a puppy this small to go under anesthesia, I am very worried about doing this. TIA :confused: |
The general rule of thumb is to double the weight at three months, so your breeder is probably right about his adult size being between 3-4 pounds. While neutering early can prevent lots of undesirable male behavior like marking, most vets prefer to wait until they are about three pounds to spay or neuter. Hopefully he'll make that weight by the time he is six months old. |
My little girl was spayed at 6 months old and she was just under 3 pounds. She did great. |
My little male was 1 1/2 years old and weighed almost 3 pounds and he did fine. He was also chriptorchid (one testicle didn't drop) so the surgery was a bit more involved but he was fine and he healed fine. I would recommend having pre-op blood work done though. |
Good vets will take size and age into consideration. Also it is very important to have a vet who is experienced with very small breed surgeries and does the pre-op bloodwork and physical prior to procedure. My girl was just under 3 lbs at 7 months when she was spayed, and did well. Neuter procedure is less invasive (if both testicles are down) than a spay |

Why not wait until the little man is around 9 months and more developed? I know, some will say Marking, etc, but I guess I just like them to be more developed, stronger, and larger. I waited until Carlo was well over a year. maybe 15 months, but they develop slow. Best of luck, and he will be fine. |

Our Toto's regular vet specializes in the Yorkie breed. She assured us that in the tiny ones her rule is 6 months or 2 lbs. Toto barely hit 2 lbs. when she was 8 months so we had to wait. She did great ... much better than we did! ;) I believe that spay/neuter is very important but would follow the advice of my vet as far as when to have it done. I would wait until he is around 9 months old. It will give him the chance to grow some more plus if he still has baby teeth they can take those out at the same time as well. Please make sure though that you have pre-surgical blood work done before surgery. Also make sure they are using a gas anesthetic such as isoflurane or sevoflurane and have an iv kept in and they are monitoring him the whole time. You can never be too careful with these little ones. |
