Crystals in urine?
 
We took Daisy to the vet bc she started barking and licking herself.
When she went for her physical about 3 months ago everything seemed to be ok except for the fact that she had an inverted vulva from being over weight. she was licking back then but the vet said to use gold bond powder on her.
Well Daisy started licking and barking and the licking was driving me crazy and I knew something was not right with her.
I was watching her sleep one night and she was moaning. Well the did xrays and a urine test and she doesn't have bladder stones but she has struvite crystals and calcium oxalate in her urine and they put her on a urinary tract support dog food.
Does this mean she is likely going to get bladder stones? Does anyone have any organic help for this? I am so worried about her this poor dog has been through so much in her 6 yrs of life.:(

Sorry to hear about Daisy. My Cali had a UTI and they said she had crystals in her urine. After the antibiotics and some powder stuff that went on her food she was fine and has not had one since (knock in wood). I hope Daisy's will improve and not need further treatment.

If left untreated, crystals can develope into stones. (Similar to a snowball effect) With meds and usually a special diet, the enviroment will change to make it unsuitable for crystals/stones to develope.

Organic, probably available, but absolutely discuss with your vet as problems can result from duplicating effects of meds... maybe get rid of the crystals first and discuss an organic maintenance for when she's cleared.

They did not put her on any meds which confuses me. They said that she did not have a UTI so there was no need for antibiotics. They just put her on prescription dog food. He said that the different diet should do the trick. I feel so bad for her bc she barks and then licks herself. I think I would of felt better if they did put her on meds. I don't want her to get bladder stones. This poor dog has been through enough coming from a puppy mill and nearly dying 3 times the first year we had her. Gosh I wish I knew about puppy mills 6 yrs ago. I was just unaware when my daughter bought her at a pet store I though that is where you get dogs. That is how dumb I was back then. I guess you learn a lot when you have to go through things.

Struvite crystals can indicate UTI but not always. If no bacteria present, antibiotics won't help. The diets specifically for dogs with crystals/stones are formulated to prevent further developement of stones/crystals and to dissolve what is already there. That's why it's important not to add anything else to their food while on the special diet. It is bad to duplicate what the food will be doing already.

Also the vet made his decision on the tests done, so I'm thinking the numbers of crystals seen may be less, therefore not requiring meds.

Enticing her to drink more water and exercise could help speed up the process. Adding some water to her food and changing the water frequently may help.

I have been real strict about her diet and not giving her anything else in her food. I use to give them green beans and I don't even do that. She had no bacteria in her urine and he did tell me to throw some of the prescription wet food in the dry to entice her to drink. I give them fresh water all through out the day and I also crush ice if I notice that she is not drinking. I also was told to make sure I take her out to pee more than usual and we have been taking her out every 2 hrs now. I can always tell when she has to pee bc she starts barking and licking like it hurts. I just feel so bad for her, and I really don't want her to have to go through bladder stones, so I have been really careful with everything. Hopefully this perscription diet will do what it is supposed to.
