Hurt lil pup ... advice? please! Hey guys I'm in overprotective new-mom mode. Kasha got her last round of puppy shots today (a little late) She got DHLPP & Rabies, one on each shoulder area. She was fine during the shots but SCREAMED bloody murder for about 5 mins after. She's eaten since we've been home & is resting but can't seem to find a comfy place. She cries every few minutes as she readjusts herself. The vet (wont go back btw) said nothing about this level of discomfort only that she might be sleepy. She's not a complainer either, she will take a nip from a larger pup & keep playing or jump off the bed and walk it off. So I'm worried that she's still crying. It breaks my heart to hear her cry when she moves. Please tell me it's normal/I'm an overprotective mom. Also any home remedies for the pain/anxiety? :thumbdown |
Hi there! I'm sorry your vet gave her two shots on the same day. Usually with how small our yorkies are most people separate the vaccines so they only get one each visit. She got a big combo of vaccines today. Keep a good eye on her. Hopefully the painful injection sites will be her only reaction and those are quite typical. If you notice lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive shaking, pale gums, etc then you should call the ER vet and possibly bring her in. next time she's due for vaccines make sure the vet knows only to give one each visit. Also i noticed that she got the DHLPP. Most people do not give lepto (L) to small dogs unless they disease is prevalent in the area. Check with your new vet next time. If it needs to be given ask that the lepto be given separate on a different visit and that she just get the DHPP vaccine. if you do a search here you will find dr dodds vaccine protocol which most people here follow. Do your own research on vaccines and decide what is best to follow for you, your pets, and your situation. |
You can put a warm compress on the injection sites and that might give some relief. I separate vaccines too. After this last time with my Doodlebug he will not be getting DHPP again. It is just too hard on him and he was sick for days afterward. If your pup is still not feeling well in the morning I would give them a call. |
Yea I had no idea 2 shots couldn't be given at the same time. I wont be going back to that vet, even for tomorrow if I need to take her. She wont let me or my boyfriend pick her up without yelping so I'm hoping that will start to fade out by tomorrow. I guess I forget how teeny she is. My 2 Scotties never had an issue, but then 20 lbs must help. Thanks for the words of wisdom. Hopefully she will tough it out. :-( |
I had problems this year for the first time with the DHPP. It happened with four of my pups and I had never had issues before, so that is kind of strange. They screamed when touched for 24 hours. After that, they were fine. I swear something has changed in those shots. Hopefully she will be better tomorrow. My vet prescribed benadryl, but only time really helped it. |
I agree with the above. If she is still in pain today, you can ask a vet for pain meds. |
She's much better today. Her tail is up and wagging. She's still wincing a bit when she walks and yelps when I pick her up. I'm most likely going to call another vet because I refuse to go back to the one who did her shots. Can't be too careful with these little ones. |
I would give her some baby aspirin in she still seems to be having some pain around the injection site.... Buffered Aspirin (325 mg Adult tablets or 65 mg Baby Aspirin) DOGS: 15 pounds or less — gve 1/4 adult or 1 baby aspirin orally once or twice a day. 15-30 pounds — give 1/2 adult tablet orally once or twice a day. 30 pounds or more — give I adult tablet orally 1-2 times a day! |
I called my boyfriend's mom's vet. They said to give her a little more time to heal but if she is still in pain we will see them as soon as I get off work tomorrow. They said not to give her any meds at all at this point because she's just expressing that shes in pain when we pick her up. I don't want to go against him because he has been treating the family dog for many years(why I didn't just drive the distance to go there in the first place is beyond me). So fingers crossed that she feels better or it is another day at the vet for Kasha. |
I hope she is back to normal soon. Pixie had her DHPP today and I am nervous hearing that people are having problems with their babies and the shot. |

If it makes you feel any better, the only thing I have been seeing a lot of is pain....seems to be generalized pain that disappears after 24 hours. Interestingly, I just found out that my vet is switching vaccines because suddenly Merrial is out of the DHPP???? I am wondering if they figured out something was wrong??? Might just be my paranoid mind..who knows. All I know is that for years I never had an issue and this past year I had FOUR pups have pain following that vaccine. Seems more than irony to me. |
Good news! Kasha is back to normal. Little bit of a hesitance on her right leg but I'm "allowed" to carry her without any yelling. Whew. Thank you for the words& caring thoughts from everyone. :) |
my vet never does rabies and the others together, because they are too little, I hope she is better soon |

OP....glad to hear your puppy is feeling better now. |

Oh, I absolutely think so! Prior to this past year, I had never had any issues. For it to happen to four pups in the same household is more than irony in my way of thinking. |
