I'm so glad Kissy is doing better. And so sorry you lost Secret. Reading this post was so sad; I'm glad things are going well. I dread anything happening to my Charlie. There really is something about Yorkies. I NEVER thought I'd be so attached. We lost our Cinni very suddenly last year. She was 7. I'm still convinced she picked up something at the pound. She had gotten out of the house unseen (which was not like her.) Usually when we let her out to pee, one of us was right with her. But during the times we weren't, she would just do her business and come back and sit on the step. This time, though, the kids were arguing and I was unloading groceries and she got out. Since no one knew she was out, I figure she had come back to the step and waited and got bored. A neighbor from down the street, who didn't know we even had a dog, called the pound. In the meantime, I realize she's gone and we go on a search for her. The worry was beyond belief. She was a little tiny 4 pound teacup poodle. I called the police and the pound. No one answered at the pound and I left a message. I called a bunch more times and left more messages. The next morning I called again, and I got a live person. She told me they did have Cinni but I could only pick her up between 4 and 5. I had a wedding that day and went but left early, picked up my son and off we went to get her. I was never so glad to see anything or anyone in my life. The pound was disgusting, though. I brought her in for a grooming and she was fine. The next day in the early afternoon I think she had a stroke. She suddenly couldn't walk right and then was paralyzed from the waist down. She wasn't in any pain it seemed, and I knew the vet couldn't do anything at that point. I just held her and talked to her until she died at 9 o'clock. I couldn't even leave her to go to the bathroom. I informed the pound and they were nice but said it wasn't anything she got there. I still don't believe it. I'm glad your vet is so knowledgeable. I got taken for a huge ride the first time Cinni got sick. How do you know what sounds right and reasonable? At least kids can verbalize. I'm so sorry your dog was so sick and hope that things continue to go well. It sounds like Kissy is in good hands! |

So glad she's doing better ! I have no experience with this kind of thing but how good it is to know you found a medication that works and you just may save the lives of others dealing with these kinds of issues - and sorry about your little 4 year old - that had to be devestaiting - |
Oh my goodness Mary4, that is so very sad. To lose a furbaby in your arms and after being in a nasty pound. I can't imagine finding my precious little one in such conditions. I know you are as vigilant as I am and my Kissy is treated like a human. She does not have a clue what it's like out there with other 4-legged babes. Thankfully you were able to cradle your beloved in your arms and I know she knew her mom was there. My heart just breaks to know what you were/are going through. I cannot fathom being without my Kissy and even though Secret has been gone long enough for most people to say "you should be over it", I will never get over losing a loved one. He was my boy and he gave me heel kisses every where I walked. I'd wake up in the morning and his sweet little nose was pressed up against mine. Each babe has their unique personality and way they express their love. Hugs to you! |

Thanks so much for your kind words. It good to have this site to "talk" to others and maybe my experiences can help someone a tiny bit. I know I've found helpful advise in various threads. :) |
I am so happy Kissy is doing better. |
Even though holding Cinni while she died was truly painful, it was powerful just the same. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. She truly was in no pain. She just looked at me and there was this strange connection. She came to us when we needed her. I (yet again) didn't want a dog. My mom was dying at the time. Cinni comforted my kids through those weeks. She just "knew" they were so sad. And I don't think you ever "should" be over losing someone you love, be it a person or a pet. |
Theophylline Thanks for your information. I have a 15 year old yorkie with the same problem except she also has cushing disease which she is on Lysoderm. She is taking Aminophylline, Orbax, Enalapril and Tobutrol for her heart and trachea but her coughing is still bad. I am going to call my vet tomorrow and ask him about Theophylline by Barr. |
Another medication that I have had success with is Lomotil. A lot of vets are not familiar with this. It is an anti diarrheal that has been around for a long time...for some reason it helps with CT. If your vet has not heard of it, let him/her know it is in the Kirk's Veterinary Therapy book. |
Jerry, I definitely hope that you will find this a solution. I also am curious about using lomotil. I am keeping the lomotil tip as a back up plan for myself should things change with Kissy. All the best to you and your furbaby!:aimeeyork |
Your post was so heart-felt. I'm so glad your baby is getting better. (I sent you a private message.) |
thank you My little sweetheart has an enlarged heart and CT; my vet is wonderful and she has directed us on the correct medications. She just started krickett on Theophyline 100mg 1/2 morning, 1/2 night. I started him on it last night, and he seemed so restless. I have looked at the side effects and know this is one of them. By looking at the research and other information on this site, I know it will be good for him. Guess I need reassuance at this point. So sad to see them have breathing problems...Hope this helps!:aimeeyork |
Bekgarrett I just wanted to add my history with Theophyline. We have a Pom who just recently turned 8 and she has been taking theophyline all of her life. She has a partial collapsed Trachea and Asthma. Anyway I just wanted to let you know that prolonged use does mess with the kidneys. Our vet does bloodwork and tests her urine every year to keep an eye on her kidney functions. |
I just posted to this thread yesterday and I talked to our vet today. My Husband had taken our Pom to get her bloodwork done on thursday last week and the vet sent us a letter saying they needed to discuss her results from the bloodwork. Unfortunately it was not good. Her Bun and Creatinine levels are elevated and he needs a Urine sample to confirm what he and we already suspect. Her kidneys are failing and the Urine sample will give him a better idea of how bad it is. |
I'm sorry, Lori, about your baby. I hope you are able to flush her kidneys and find something for her trachea and asthma. My little girl, Ashley, had an enlarged heart and CT(a mild case compared to my little one, Gracie), and she lived until right before her seventeenth birthday. Their sister, Kiwi, took enalapril for her heart, and it immediately started to damage her kidney. My heart goes out to you, and you both will be in my prayers. |
