Kia---Cushings.... Hi, I'm back and having problems getting Kia to eat.....She is now on 25mg of metotadine per week for the next two weeks, then back in for more testing, in the meantime she slowed down on eating right after her 25mg pill and now, 8 days later, is refusing to eat, she is still drinking fine. I'm wondering if I should give her a prednisone, call the vet or just take her to the vet. She is not lethargic, is actually showing some personality now! Any suggestions? Should I go with the pred as it is now 4:30pm and then take her in tomorrow? Cushings is awful and the lady that had her and DID NOT TREAT HER should be whipped. (sorry, just makes me mad as Kia is sooo sweet -weighing in at 3 1/2 lbs now- and as cute as a bugs ear!) Also, any thoughts on us changing her name? Would it be too traumatic as she has had the same name for 9 years? |
I'd call the vet and ask about giving her the pred. |
Just read your previous posts about Kia. God bless you for taking her in and treating her Cushings. You are doing a wonderful thing for her. |
Our Vet has said to use the pred when/if I think we need to.... |
Then yes, I would give her the pred. My dog has addisons and she takes pred every other day. I think she will feel better if you give it to her. |
I gave her the pred, it's only 1/4 of a 5mg tablet.....I just really worry when she doesn't eat...thanks so much for replying....she is so small.. |
Thanks for updating on Kia :). And once again, bless your heart. If I were you, since Kia is so new to her Cushings treatment, I'd probably phone the vet - describe the symptoms and ask if the pred should be given. Loss of appetite, shaking, vomiting can all be signs that the treatment is going too far (cortisol *too* low) and pred is now needed - but Mitotane can also mess w/ appetite, so it can be a tough call. Oh, oops - I see you gave her the pred already. How is she doing? Is her appetite better? Hugs to Kia, would love to keep hearing about her. |
When Ted was on Prednisone, the one thing the docs forgot to mention was that you just can't stop giving it, you have to wean them off slowly; thank God for this place or I'd never known that and really messed him up. I hope your baby feels better and has a big meal!! Read up on the Prednisone just to be safe when you stop giving it. xo |
Hi! OK, I just talked to the vet, she told me I did the right thing giving her the pred, it's not much, but then Kia is not much either! She finally ate at about 9 last night. This morning we are back to it, she's not hungry and today is the day she gets her mitotane again, last time she got it was one week ago, the dose is 25mg. oh groan.....why is this happening.....alright, I'm going to think positive, Kia has been on an antibiotic, she desperately needs every single one of her teeth pulled, hopefully we can get that done next week. I am madly in love with this tiny girl, her little personality is finally coming through and she is just a nut! She loves to tease and play! She has a very quiet little bark and at times she will come and bark right at me! Thanks so much for all the help and yes, I'll keep all of you posted on her.. |

So glad to hear she ate, good news. But not hungry again this morning, darn. What if you sprinkled some Parmesan cheese on her food, can you try that? Of course, you also don't want to mask (too much) if her cortisol is too low. Is her next ACTH Stim not for awhile yet? I'm wondering if, after the Mitotane loading dose, she is now needing a decrease in her maintenance dose..even less than she is getting now? So hard to say... Or, did vet go straight to maintenance dose w/ her and skip loading dose? |
No, we did the loading dose, we are going to do the stim test (AGAIN) next week, she wants to do that first and then depending on how that turns out hopefully do her teeth. I'm just wondering if her teeth hurt so much that she doesn't want to eat? I've NEVER seen such bad teeth and her breath smells so bad that we actually gag, seriously. It's very hard to hug her and kiss her, we have to hold our breath. I just don't get it, she is so small and so adorable, her little face is to die for, how could someone let this happen? I'll put her picture up on this thread....I also have a little tiny guy, Sterling, that my kids got me, they paid huge $ for him, he's a little tiny guy, 4lbs, and he is my life! He goes in for checkups regularly. I'm totally devoted to Sterling and now of course Kia also. They are just so cute together!! I'll try the parmesan!! |
I'm aware of the pred and not to just go cold turkey with it....thanks! |
Kia sounds so precious. :) I missed your first thread, so I just went back and read it. Kia is a lucky, lucky little girl to have found you. Thank you for loving her and giving her the care she needs! We'd love to see pictures of her. Welcome to YT! |

If she is going to have them removed, it may be pointless to try much in terms of treatment - but some here use Petzlife gel and that can help w/ odor and tarter etcetera. I also use ProDen Plaque Off sprinkle (I get at the "Barkery" in Phx...do I have the name right, shoot?). |

What are you currently feeding Kia? |
I assume b/c she has bad teeth shes on soft foods. Maybe if you puree it and make it a bit like a soup she could lick it... Also maybe mixing it with warm water will entice her? |

I did ask the vet about orajel....she said no. She doesn't want to introduce anything more than what we are doing. Here is a picture of Kia... Kia's first day 011 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! |

She is ADORABLE :)! Just a little punkin', little peanut! Thanks for posting her pic :). |

I'm really glad you've already asked the vet about the orajel. Hopefully all her aches will go away soon, thanks to your help. :) |

Oh she's so cute! |
SterlingsMom - just read your blog post too, loved it :). Wow. I know I keep saying this but...I still am floored you took a Cushings dog into your home - Cushings is so complicated and SO expensive. Little Kia is one lucky little lady :). |
Kia deserves the chance to experience love. She deserves so much more than what she has had. Our love has no boundries........Know that our prayers are with your baby also, this is a terrible disease, how these little babies ever got this horrible thing I do not know, but I do know this, every single moment of Kia's life from now on is going to be filled with love and care, she will never walk alone through this life again. Our hearts just broke when we saw her, they broke for the fact that her mom could just hand her over, (no tears on that lady's part), and tears for the fact that we were taking Kia away from her sister (litter mate) that she had spent the last 9 years with. If we hadn't taken her she was going to a shelter! Could you even imagine? my god. We couldn't let that happen, we just couldn't. |
I wish I could give you a huge hug!!! I really hope you're going to be around on YT for a long time to come! |
How long do these little dogs with cushings have? Does anyone really know? My vet says that when Kia gets stable on her mitotane she can live a normal life....(do they ever get stable on the meds? :) )..... |

Wylie is on mitotane as well (M,W,F -- 100mg) and he does so well on it. We just had a Stim about a week ago and his post-stim cortisol was 3!!!! It has taken us almost a year to get it there (had to keep titrating, Stim, adjust, repeat). He really has no side effects on the med, we've been very lucky. With your girl's history, I'm sure you will bring her to a place of healing - even if it takes some time. Go Kia! |
What do you put Wilie's pill in? Mine are capsules, your's too? I swear this little girl absolutely knows which bite I try to hide it in! (My daughter and I have been sleeping on the floor in the living room where we have Kia set up because our beds are too high for her to get on and she won't stay in our arms..we have been heart broken because she won't sleep with us, well, tonight my daughter got the stuff out for our floor bed and here came Kia just running and got right ON MY PILLOW and promptly fell asleep! Looks like I just lost my pillow, we are so excited! She has never come close to our bed until tonight!) |

LOL on the floor bed, I love it! And the pillow stealing! She is clearly going to embrace the life of luxury, as she well deserves...there is a princess inside of her afterall :p. |
We feed Solid Gold and I've been just sticking the mitotane right in the food, hiding it, but she finds it in her mouth and spits it out! Kia slept real well last night, she should have, (my pillow cost a nice little "$100.00"!) I had a total jaw joint removal and really do need the pillow in order to sleep. oh well.... I've got to say that this little one is indeed taking over the household, her new brothers and sister just hover over her, my daughter and I grovel at her tiny little feet...yep, she's the princess. (We just moved to Carefree Crossing, love the house and have an extra bonus room that is decorated just for the kids...just this morning Kia went into the bonus room to check out the toys and games...maybe she is feeling a little better.. |
