My Yorkie boy won't poop My Yorkie boy is having trouble, he will not poop without an enema. He was always healthy, and still eats good. He is Raw fed, and he has been to the vet twice, they can't seem to find out why. We just came back from Florida and he seems to be a bit depressed. He was fine in Fl. but since we got up here, three weeks ago, he won't poop. The vet gave me and enema, and it worked in 15 seconds, and then another 5 days and nothing. I gave another enema, and same thing. I really need help if someone has had this problem. Willy is 16 months old, and I love him to death. He has not lost any weight, so I am totally confussed. What exactly are you feeding? I really think you will need to adjust diet here... |
I would suggest that you try to add more fiber to his diet. You could try giving a spoon full of canned packed pumpkin (not pie filling) in his food or maybe a few green beans as a treat. I don't know a lot about Raw diet so I'm not sure if this would even be very helpful to you. :confused: |
Hi. Thanks so much for the reply. He does get pumpkin and carrots and green beans. He don't strain when he goes and it isn't hard, he just acts like he don't know he as to go. He will cry for me to take him out, and then just pee, although he just don't know he has to go. He gets all kind of raw things, plus I still give him some cooked food, just a bit, and not cooked done, he seems to love his food, although when he is shaking,(witch he does every morning) he don't seem to want to eat. Like I mentioned, he wakes up at 5.30 am, and he wakes me up trembling. As soon as we get up, he quits the shaking, and jumps on my lap and goes back to sleep. I follow the raw feeding diet very close, and make sure he has a balanced diet, and when he is feeling ok, he runs and chases birds, and then just as fast he lays down and sleeps for no reason. I am really concerned with him, but vet says nothing is wrong. Thanks so much for all the info. Patches and Willy |
Maybe the raw diet is not agreeing with him? I know it has helped a lot of dogs; but perhaps it is not the diet for your particular pup? |
How much does he weigh? There is something else going on with the shaking in the morning.. What tests has the vet run? |
If you up his liver amount, does it cause looser stools? I would try that and also make sure you are not feeding too much bone as some pups just can't tolerate as much as others. Not to be graphic but when he does go poop what is it like? If there is a lot of white and it's really crumbly I would definately think it's too much bone. I'd also be interested to see if it improves with a little added liver. Please be very careful with this as I had a friend who lost a puppy recently because of a similar problem. She wound up with mega colon. Not to scare you but this can become very serious. |
My Willy is almost 2, but he weighs 11 lbs, he is not fat, he is just bigger than a normal yorkie. This only started 3 weeks ago, and his poop is dark brown, and not hard or powered. I feed him liver, and if he gets too much then he gets very loose stools. I am so worried cause the vet didn't take this more serious. I am taking him for second oppinion Monday. I will do any thing to help him. I have been keeping up with enema's to make sure he goes, but I don't think that is good either. I really appreciate all the feedback on this. He is my first Yorkie baby, and I am so deeply in love with him, don't know how I can do without him. Patches and Willy |
I forgot to say, he eats 80 % meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ meat, which 5% is liver. I hope I have not did any thing to hurt him. He has never been away from me in his whole life. He does act like he just has no urge to go, except when I give him an enema, he goes out and has the urge in 15 seconds. Thanks all of you for being so helpful. |

Another thing I'll throw out there is to put him on a temporary (like 2wks or so) hypoallergenic diet - like fish, potatoes, greens - to rest his system. Of course, it's really more important at this point to find out if something is medically wrong - especially since this *just* happened suddenly, in the last 3 weeks. But just keep the diet thing in mind for down the road, if needed. Please keep us posted and I hope he feels better soon! :) |
A diet change would be needed to see if things improve. The bone isn't going to do any favors right now. But since it has been going on for three weeks, I think it's time for an internist. |
My Yorkie had that problem when she first came home and the vet told me to give her a little mineral oil. |
Are you sure he didn't eat something (out side of food) that he shouldn't have and their isn't a particle blockage in the bowels. I don't know anything about the raw diet so Im clueless on how to adjust to get the bowels to move more "aggressively" then they are now. Good job on wanting a second opion. Sometimes vets get lost in the Oh its ok give them this, instead of giving the option of more test/ideas. Sara |
Hi everyone, thanks for all the response. Willy still has to have enema, but he is going to the other vet this week. His regular vet did xray him and found nothing but a colon full of poop, but he don't seem to know he has to go. I will check back in when the other vet sees him. Again thanks for all the input. Hi everyone, Willy had a complete blood workup. Nothing wrong. Now I am really worried, why won't he poop on his own? I am so worried, and don't have a clue what to do. I pray for my little one, I just don't what to do at this point. He is very lively, and runs all over the house, unless of corus he has not went to the potty in three days, and then all he wants is for me to stay out with him, but he still won't go without the emema.
