Two yorkies foaming at the mouth I have 2 yorkies about a year old that just came inside the house this evening foaming at the mouth. Ones about 5lbs ones about 8 lbs. They have never done this before and I found it strange both of them were foaming at the mouth at the same time. The smaller one through up 10 minutes or so after they stopped foaming at the mouths. They seem ok now. (about an hour later). |
Do you have frogs or toads in the yard? That might be the culprit. Personally, I'd call an ER vet in the event that it's poisoning (plant or insect) of some kind. |
Welcome to YT! :D |
Do you have frogs in your yard? If so they can release a toxic substance for protection if a dog tries to bite them, and it will make the dog foam at the mouth. The way to treat it is to wash the mouth out very thoroughly, and around the nose too. |
More than likely they got a hold of a bull frog. Possibility of fire ants. Either way, I'd contact the ER vet and ir talk over with them just to make sure you cover basis......You don't to go to bed tonight thinking all is fine and wake up to a very sick or dead dog. Each encounter with a frog lowers their resistance to the venum they emit making it more life threatening. |
I know in AZ we would wash their mouths out but also rush them to ER because of the poison in the toads. |
Wow thanks for the quick responses guys. Yes it sounds like thier are a bunch of toads out tonight! |

Yup, my boys do that too... I know the toads around my area are harmless but when the dogs find and harass one I can tell because they foam around the mouth. I always just wash their mouths out with water and it stops. |
Ringo barely got close to a toad last summer and he was foaming at the mouth. It scared me at first; then I figured out it was the toad. |
