High ALP (alkaline phosphatase) Ok so Barney got over pancreatitis recently. His ALP was in the 200s and now went up to 300s. The vet does not suspect Cushings with these numbers but why the elevation? She is thinking it may be part of things being wacky after pancreatitis but did not sound so convinced. Since he is acting normally, we are just repeating bloods in a couple of months. Anyone have any ideas? Should I take him to the internist for this? I'm worried about my Barney Boo. |
I concur with your vet (as long as it isn't going to continue to go higher), but will do some looking around later. He has been bile acids tested, right (just always have to ask with Yorkies)? So many things can make liver enzymes go up. :( |

We didn't know Ellie had high bile acids until age 6. It is just a good indicator of liver function. Since high doesn't necessarily meant LS/MVD, it is not a bad idea to do it, esp. if things continue to get worse. I know older animals can have higher liver enzymes, but I think really...well...that reasoning just isn't for me so much. Ten years old for a Yorkie is not old. Still think it could've been because of the pancreas, but he also had an ALT issue before. So goign further may not be a bad idea (imo). |
ALKP is important in metabolism and is found in liver cells. High levels indicate bile duct obstruction, Cushing's, liver disease, certain cancers and may be due to certain drugs such as steroids or phenobarbital. Low levels indicate starvation or malnutrition. the pancreas affects the liver - I bet if you did bats on him he has mvd - dd never had high alt nor high alkp and she has mvd - are you feeding a lower protein diet? I would not worry too much if acting fine many times vets will say treat the dog not the blood work as blood work can change based on alot of things so i would not stress over it myself |
nah I dont think he has MVD. He is on a 23% protein diet. He is doing fine. Not sick in the slightest. When his ALT jumped, I took him to the bd. cert. internist who said "boring boring" on his blood work and I suspect he would do that now. He advised me no need for BAT on last liver readings. Who knows. I am not sure. Now he has a staph infection on top of everything else and a hot spot. I suspect caused by allergies again. Trying to contain that here with mupirocin ointment rather than going for oral antibiotics - not sure I'll be successful tho. |

have you tried chlorhexedine shampoo by duoxo? I just finished antibiotics in dd clindamycin as she had a nasty staph and it came back after being on antibiotics for 25 days so she went on for 30 and hoping it does not come back :( |
