I feel so much closer to Layla now. I am learning to know what she wants and needs. Mostly, she just wants to be by me all the time. If I'm near her, she's happy. If I'm not, she cries. In the mornings, Scott takes her downstairs while I'm getting ready upstairs, and he gives her breakfast and expresses her bladder. And most days, she will cry until I come downstairs, and she doesn't eat her kibble until I'm eating my breakfast! She's been weird like that too, not eating any meal until we're sitting down eating our meal. She can have her food an hour before we do, but she will just let it sit there until we eat! She's so polite lol! Yesterday, she did pretty good on the exercise ball but didn't do as well as last week on the treadmill. The vet can't figure out her big changes from day to day. Instead of a steady forward pace in her recovery, some days she goes forwards, and some days she goes backwards. Maybe it's just her state of mind, or how tired she is, or maybe even the time of day they work on her. |

Layla had some time on the weekend where none of us seemed able to find her bladder, and when we did only a tiny bit would come out. Well, that just happened here. I tried to express her at noon with no luck (although she did poop, as soon as we hit the bathroom, and after she had cried in her crate. Possible correlation? I'm wondering if she's getting some bowel control back) Anyways, I took her back an hour later and after 15 minutes could only get a little squirt out. I'm going to continue trying the "sniff and pee" test, where I will get her to sniff an old spot and see if she can go on her own. Either we're just getting really incompetant with expressing her, or she's not letting us express her, which would be a great sign of gaining control back! |
I hope this is good news! I can't imagine you've all become incompetent at expressing her given how long you both have been doing it, so praying that Layla is getting back her bladder control! :) Maybe try putting her on a piddle pad to see if she will go herself? If it won't harm her, of course. |
It won't hurt her, we usually express her over a pad anyway! I've been trying to just hold her back end up while she sniffs around and I tell her to pee, but she hasn't done it yet. Maybe if I use the sling more, she might. I know she wouldn't do it even before being hurt if I was hovering around, especially if I were to be kneeling down beside her! We'll see how well Scott does with expressing her tonight, he's usually better than me. I forgot to write the other thing in the last post! There was some big board meeting here today and a bunch of trays of food were ordered, but they ended up going out for lunch so the rest of us got to eat :) I had already eaten my lunch (and Layla ate her breakfast at the same time... I skipped breakfast this morning, so she did too ) but I decided later to go get a plate of fruits and veggies for Layla and I :D When I came back, as I was walking around my desk, her tail was wagging slowly as she was trying to see what was on the plate! It wasn't for very long, and I got my camera out within about 3 seconds, and she had already stopped! I really need to rig up a 24 hour crate cam! We just went to her laser therapy appointment and I sling walked her in and out... no carrier for her today! The waiting room was packed and she got so much attention! I hope some people go away knowing that just because a dog doesn't have working legs, it can still be happy! She had no problem even getting up and down off the sidewalk! |
It seems like she does the tail wagging when you just enter a room, and often when you have food for her. Ever think about setting up the camera, focusing on her lil tushy, leaving the room for a couple of minutes, and entering with a treat or something that might pique her interest? Just a thought. :) |
Lol Scott has tried that, but maybe we should try it more often. We haven't been setting up the camera in the mornings yet this week, and that's usually a good time for her wags! |
That's such exciting news:) I'm so happy for you. How accurate do you have to be to express her bladder? That'd be so wonderful if she's gaining more control over her bladder. All that tail-wagging is wonderful too! Hooray:p:D:p:D |
Do you sling walk her often? Belle was walked outside in a sling more often than not after both of her surgeries. We would even let the tip of her toes occasionally barely drag over the ground, just enough to try and remind her that her you have legs back here (Dr's instructions). Belle never liked the crate and was always so happy to walk in the sling or just be carried...just not the crate. Although at times it was unavoidable. Reading her progress truly brings tears to my eyes. She is making such wonderful progress because of her AWESOME mommy & daddy! Keep up the outstanding work!!:) |
I can't wait to see if she might potty on her own. Tail wags and sling-walking! Go Layla!:D |
The hard part about expressing her bladder is just finding her bladder :) When it's full it's like a water balloon shaped like a small plum. It's somewhere between her back legs and her stomach lol. And it slips out of my fingers a lot! When she's a little bloated or her stomach's tight, it's really hard to squeeze around and find it. We hadn't been sling walking with Layla much, maybe once or twice a day to go to her pad to be expressed. Today we let her sling walk into the college for rehab and as soon as she walked in, ALL of the reception ladies were impressed! The tech who came to take her from us commented on how proud she looked! I will need to post some pictures :) I have some from our golf day too! Maybe I can find some time for that today. |

I am so happy to hear that Layla is tail-waggin again. She sounds like she is really doing well. Your weekend away seemed like the perfect vacation for all of you...cannot wait to see pictures!:animal-pa |
3 Attachment(s) Thanks for the continued thoughts and prayers for our little family :) Here are some pictures of Layla from this past weekend. 1. Layla's first real stroll outside 2. Layla sitting with us around the fire pit 3. "Why isn't there fire mom?" I have a couple more pictures from the golf course but they are tiiiiny and still not below the 200 kb allowed for pictures =/ So I guess this is okay for now! |
She's so cute in her stroller. It's got to be so good for her to be able to get out like that! She looks like she was really enjoying herself. To keep her spirits up must help her recover.:) |
Lindsey your story has touched all our hearts here on YT. Although I do not post often, not a day goes by that I do not check for updates on Layla. I am so very happy to hear how well she is doing. You are a very special young lady and I do believe in my heart that you, Scott and Layla will have a happily ever after! The pictures of Layla in her stroller seem to tell the entire story! Look how she is "smiling" in the first picture! I look forward to hearing about Layla's continued progress :heart to ~Debbie |
The thing that makes me feel the best is when people comment on how happy Layla seems. On Tuesday we were at the vet's office for laser therapy, and the waiting room was full, and Layla sling-walked in and sniffed around and "smiled" at everyone! One lady started asking me what's wrong with her and why she can't use her back legs, if she'll ever be able to walk again, etc. And her husband just commented "Well she sure looks happy anyway!" We got the same thing when we picked her up last night from rehab. At least two people commented on how she was so full of spirit. I just hope it helps people to see that with a little dedication any dog can live a full life even when handicapped. I feel like I hit a point a couple of days ago where I just saw the light... if Layla doesn't improve another inch, I will be happy and love her as she is. She is still perfect to me! We will continue taking her to rehab and I might stick with laser therapy for a few more weeks, but I think in July we'll look at ordering her a cart so she can run around the yard with us in the evenings. That is why we bought our house in the first place :) |
What a great GREAT attitude Linz!!! Don't give up hope yet but know there are alternatives! :) I cannot stress enough how lucky Layla is to have you and Scott as parents. She is adorable in her stroller, I love pics of her! :) |

Reading this one post makes me quite emotional. How lucky Layla is to have you and how lucky you are to have Layla. And just because you put her in a cart doesn't mean she won't progress beyond where she is. I am not sure if it was here or a PM where I shared with you the story about the shihtzu here in NJ that was featured on Animal Planet's DOGS 101. The little thing was in a cart for a few years and one day began walking again. So with love and determination anything is possible for these little ones. They should all definitely be judged by their spirit and determination instead of their size. That is why they all feel they are big dogs!! Keep that fabulous mind-set. It will take all of you even further! |
Aww; I think she looks really happy in her pink stroller. Love the pictures! She looks perfectly content to me. I read your thread often and am so glad that Layla is doing better. |
Thank you everyone, and thank you Christie for helping me out with your stories as well! I could not get Layla's bladder expressed today and it worried me a lot! I tried 3 times between noon and 2 pm and there was nothing. Her last pee was this morning at 7. So when we went in for laser therapy, I asked the tech if she would mind trying it for me. She tried and couldn't get a thing, so she called the vet in to try. She tried too, and couldn't even find the bladder. She said it must not be filled, maybe she just didn't drink anything. I'd guess that took about 5 minutes total.... and I was charged an extra $31 for it!!!!! My bill went from $22 to $53. Now I know not to ask for help expressing her there anymore! It's been almost 10 hours without expressing now so I'm going to give it another try again soon. I think she's just trying to keep me on my toes! |
Well, she does always look happy!:D Do you suppose she's going on her own? |
I wondered that, but she is always in her crate and I checked the fleece bedding and there's no signs of any pee. I did get some out when I expressed her after the last post, thank goodness. We had a nice cuddle tonight on the couch. We both fell asleep for about an hour. We're getting back to being normal again. When she was thirsty she let me know she wanted back in her crate. So in she went, had a drink, and went back to sleep in there. |
Ah! She loves to cuddle with mommie.:p She seems to be doing pretty well and she's happy. I always come check on Layla. She's so precious!:) |
She really does seem so happy in her stroller:) I'll bet your positive attitude is helping her so much!!! Is a possible reason the bladder is getting harder to express is because she is controlling it...because that'd be great!! |
It is just wonderful to read how well Layla is doing and how committed you are to taking care of her. She is a lucky dog. Those pictures of Layla in her stroller are adorable. You wouldn't know anything was wrong with her at all. She looks likes she is sitting there on her own going along for a great ride. Too cute! |
