Neutered and seems in pain Buddy was neutered yesterday, he was given an inflamitory injection and a antibiotic injection to last 3 days, but today he seems totally restless and adjetated as tho he is in pain, the vets is closed until tomorrow and I dont know how to calm him down. Does anybody have any ideas? |
WOW! I don't know what to say. My Vet gave pain meds to be administered for three days post surgery to relieve any discomfort for my two dogs. My third dog goes on May 7th to be neutered. Is there an ER Vet you can call? Maybe they can give you something. Also, one of the seasoned breeders here may have some type of home remedy for pain. Sorry...wasn't much help I suppose... |
I was expecting some meds after reading all the threads on here, but I dont think British vets do that, I am gonna phone straight up tomorrow, but I am just on pins at the moment for his discomfort. Thanks anyway, its just nice to know someone has read your thread |
Perhaps the British Vets don't do this. You guys don't dock tails or declaw cats either. So it's very possible pain meds aren't given. There are clear differences at times between our countries in the manner of pets. But I do understand how you feel. My female was in that same type of pain her 2nd night after surgery. She woke up around midnight and just couldn't get settled (she sleep in bed with us). And I knew she was in pain. I got up and got her a dose of pain meds and she was back to sleep within 15 mins. I'd like to say maybe a cool washcloth at his privates might just soothe the area a little. My only concern though with that is the area probably shouldn't get wet. I know here in the US we are not allowed to bath after spay or neuter for two weeks. I'm just dumstruck on this one. Sorry. Let's hope someone with some holistic knowledge can maybe help? |
I have actually thought about the cold wet cloth, his stitches are inside and not on the outside, which is a new thing, he didnt even need a lamp shade, well thats what we callt them, the vet said all the stitches are internal and they are, I cannot see anything except folds of skin, but if I put the wet cloth on them it could irritate even more, thanks for mailing back tho, its so good to talk to someone else |
Is he swollen or hot at the incision site? Neuters shouldn't be that painful. Definitely call your vet tomorrow... may be an infection setting in... |
Do you have an Emergency vet to take him to? I'm thinking maybe a bad reaction to the injections he was given... |
Hmmm? What exactly do you mean by "he seems agitated as though he is in pain". Could you possibly give a few more details? My 2 males are neutered and they were back to their normal selves within a day or two and the vet didn't prescribe pain meds for them either. Please keep us updated on how the little guy is doing. |
phew its hard to describe, one min hes seems fine, then he quickly jumps up shoots to somewhere else in the room and starts licking there, for the last two hours he has been doing this, on and off the settee, in and out of the house, but for the last 15 mins he seems a bit settled, he seemed totally fine this afternoon and we did go for a walk, he has eaten normally altho he did have diahorria 3 times last night, we dont really have what you have 24hr vets, wished we did, but tomorrow as soon as vets open, I will be on the blower, work comes second fiddle to my little furbaby |

Maybe clean him real good, be sure no diarrhea is on or near the site, lukewarm water may be best. He could be sore from the clipping of the hair... any sign of razor burn? |

That is a good thought. Licking is bad too. They can lick and become more irritated. |
I called the vet this morning and I went around and picked up some pain killers and intinflamitory tabs, he seems alot better even tho its been one day on them, we have been for a walk, but I had to carry him back as he put his butt down and would not move anymore, still dont have a collar and he is still licking the area, I stop him when I see him, but during the day there is nothing I can do Thanks everyone |

Did you inquire from your vet about a surgical collar? They should have the pillow type that often work for smaller dogs. You don't want him licking and causing infection. I would wait to go on walks for a little bit, IMO. He needs some time to heal. Good luck! |
