!!!Kidney Disease :( PLEASE HELP!!!! I posted this twice... I'm sorry but I really want to help my friend. My heart just breaks to see how stressed she is on top of all of our nursing school stuff (we are so close to graduating I'd hate this to be her breaking point) Ok has anyone heard of this a book called "Kidney Disease Breakthrough"? Or 101 Recipes for Kidney Disease? My friend just found out her dog has kidney disease (congenital, exacerbated by anesthesia from her surgery to be fixed). Her BUN has been high, she has protein in her urine (12), and she is third spacing into her abdomen (meaning she is pooling fluid in her belly). It is like we are witnessing how similar canines and humans are from all our nursing experiences. She has gone to one of the top specialists in the world (which just happens to be located here in Orlando). We need help. They gave her months to live. She is only 6 months old. Is there anything anyone can recommend? Thank you soo much in advanced. I'll continue to research but anything that anyone has been successful with would be GREAT!!! |
So sorry for your friend's little one. I don't have any suggestions but bumping this up for someone who might be able to help. |
I've seen this book online for liver disease....I think the person created the book for a lot of diseases - each website seems identical to me. There is one for liver, one for kidney, etc. I never bought it... |
so sorry to hear this, i have no experience with this , hope u get the info u need, thoughts and prayers sent to the little one :animal-pa |
I'm really sorry your friends pup is having to deal with this dreadful disease. Sometimes pets have lived much longer than expected, every case different. I hope she can find some useful info to help in caring for her pup. Good luck to her..... This site has the most helpful info all in one place DogAware.com Health: Kidney Disease in Dogs There is a support group that is very knowledgeable but you have to register..... K9KIDNEYS : for owners of dogs with Kidney Disease |
You may want to PM jnsasha. Her boy Brody had this. I think he lived longer than was originally given but he did just recently succumb to it. I don't have any experience to share. |
Maybe dwerten will see your post. Or you might PM her. She's very informed. Good Luck. |

K9KIDNEYS : for owners of dogs with Kidney Disease it is not a death sentence though as my friends dog only has 25% use of his kidney and has been living fine for years and he is a liver shunt surgery survivor as well |
here is another group and the owner is a board certified dog nutritionist from guelph university in canada - she is very helpful and can construct diets so i would join this group as well to learn about diet as diet will be key - low sodium K9Kitchen : dog diets raw cooked allergies disease |

here is my friend's nephrologist so maybe a consult with her might be helpful as a second opinion I think your friend has this dog for a reason as i believe everything happens for a reason and her being a nurse this baby will get the best care and your friend will learn alot from this experience so tell her to hang in there |
i know from my friend having dealt with it she home cooks but wet food is critical for these guys as kibble is hard to digest more so than wet. Wet has moisture in it dh bro cat died of kidney failure but was much older and vet told them to have a water bowl in every room to make water always available and change out water 3-4 times a day as water is critical. I would do spring bottled water as that is what i give mine and my demi had an elevated bun on last blood draw before dental and i change out 3-4 times a day as she will not drink unless it is fresh - cats do not drink as much water as dogs and they tend to have more kidney issues than dogs- they had to end up doing sub Q's for their cat toward the end |
