Would a liver shunt show up with a reg blood test? Just wondering if a dog has a liver shunt and when taking a reg blood test would it show signs with the liver at that time? |

Liver shunt I agree with the last comment. My Pebbles has liver shunt and nothing abnormal was found on a regular blood test. Fortunately I had a vet who took her home with him and did some studying. When he tested her bile acids they were 183. Seems like normal is under 6. I can't remember exactly. |
Not on a regular cbc. On a full panel it may indicate more testing is necessary. Usually a dog with LS blood tests will show abnormalities in the bun, albumin, and the liver enzymes are elevated You can find more information here. Portosystemic Shunts FAQ |

Just learned some new info on liver enzymes: The diagnostic approach to asymptomatic dogs with elevated liver enzyme activities - Veterinary Medicine= Basicly from the article: If microcytic RBC's are present= Liver Shunt. If ALT, ALP & AST are increased two-threefold = Liver Shunt If ALT, ALP & AST are normal - mildly increased = MVD Gallbladder Mucoleles increase ALT, AST, ALP, & GGT Increase in Bilirubin & decrease in Albumin = need for diagnostic imaging and hepatic biopsy. |
