Swimmers syndrome? Hi, my baby yorkie is about 8 weeks now and she cant walk properly. At about 5 weeks I noticed she wasnt walking as her sister so started wondering. I believe she has swimmers syndrome. The vet says theres nothing I can do and I should just wait and monitor her progress. Her front legs are perfectly fine but the rear legs were facing outward, and when she would try to walk they would go back (making her look like a seal). Now she has moved them forward and is staring to lift her rear a bit. (she almost looks like she is always peeing) Does anyone know of anything I can do? Thanks |
I am so sorry for that little one. I do, in the past, remember reading about this on YT. I remember the owner doing therapy with the pup and it did walk. I hope someone remember's that story. Try doing a seach above for it. Best wishes for that little one. |

Has she ever been to the vet? Nevermind, I see you say the vet says there is nothing you can do, this doesn't sound like Swimmers syndrome since the legs are facing outwards. Hope you get some good advice. |

In the meantime, make sure her nails are trimmed, along with the hair on the footpads, to eliminate any impedance to her walking Also, give her a surface with some traction to walk on. Keep her off of smooth surfaces.I can guarantee you that doing nothing as your vet advised will get you no results. Regardless of the exact diagnosis, it is critical to do all you can quickly. If left untreated, you may have a baby crippled for life. |

woogie man thanks for all your help... she is not over weight at all. her sister is 3 pounds at 8 weeks and she is only at 1 pound 3 ounces. her legs are not very strong although i have seen some improvement since i started taking her to walk on the concrete floor outside. i will try seeing how she does this week and take her to a specialist this weekend. Ill be letting you know how it goes! thank you all so much! |

It's great to hear she's showing some improvement. It's also good that she's not heavy as that just magnifies any problem. In a way, though, I was hoping it was just a case of being a fat baby. Until you see the specialist, just keep getting her to walk. Remember about trimming the foot pads and nails and keep her off smooth surfaces. That's about it for what I can contribute. Check the link tjdmom posted. Someone there may be able to help more. Any advice given, however, is no substitute for her seeing a vet than can correctly diagnose her. Change of ID hello everyone (i had an issue with my login and had to make a new one) thanks for all your help. i will be trying the egg crate today. should i put it in their kennel? also, i wanted to mention i have wood floors... could that be the issue? she started having this problem before any of the puppies could get out of the kennel (which had good traction) but i am concerned it might have gotten worse with the wood flooring? today she showed some improvement. her feet are now more in and she is lifting up her butt, instead of dragging it with her front legs. lets see if this little miracle works her way up to walking perfectly some day :) |

The vet vaccinated her sister but told me i had to wait a couple weeks for her because she hasnt finished teething?? or maybe because she's too small still? has anyone heard of this? It doesn't sound like wood flooring is 'the' issue. It may be a contributing factor, but you state that she had problems before when on a different surface. I still strongly recommend her seeing a specialist ASAP so you can know exactly what you're dealing with. It is not normal for a pup her age to have problems walking. I have a litter of 7 week olds now and they are all over the place....running like little bunnies. The egg crate material may work if she's in a confined area. The irregular surface would help to develop the muscles. I've never personally used it so really can't offer an opinion. |

Does she have any abnormalities with her chest? I know Swimmers pups sometimes have an area in their chest that is caves in. A breeder I know a few years back had a swimmers pup and she did physical therapy 3 times a week with the pup and I believe taped the legs too. That pup also had the chest abnormality. She placed her in a pet home. Not sure what happened after that. Good luck with your baby. |
