11 week old puppy sick :(
 

We just got our little guy on thursday night. He was in great shape up until last night, started coughing everyother minute. I called the person we got him from and says that upper respiratory problems are extremely common in these small dogs. Puppy is male 111 weeks old and 2lbs by the way flown from Ohio to SF(I know the vet explained probably from a puppy mill which makes us even feel worse) being that neither of us have ever had a pet before.

Well the vet prescribed us torbugesic and clavamox he had a 103% temperature and she says even if from a puppy mill dog seems to be in good shape besides the coughing and temperature still happy.

But I am thinking since the guy we bought him from told us to use a nueblizer and gentalmin sulfate and it will clear up in 5 days which we can get from him, Vet says that the gentalmin sulfate can hurt his liver so she didn't want to prescribe it but I am thinking now since he is the guy who breeds these dogs and only these dogs I think he might know best

We are totally confused and saddened as he is now very quite becuase of the antiobiotics and just seems sad. Anythoughts or suggestions greatly appreicated.

If I were you, I'd listen to your vet...the fact that the person you bought your puppy from is a puppymiller says it all. Yorkies are prone to liver problems. I hope that your little one has a fast recovery!!

A puppy from a good responsible breeder would not send a sick coughing puppy on to it's new home. Please be careful and listen to your vet. I hope the more experienced breeders see your post, they have so much knowledge on little pups that I know they can help you, if not today (Easter Sunday) hopefully you get responses tomorrow. Please listen to the vet. Don't give the puppy anything that could damage his liver! Liver disease is very common in Yorkies so your vet is probably especially concerned since your puppy came from a puppy mill. Did you know that Yorkies are 36 times more likely to be born with a liver shunt than all other breeds combined?

The poor guy isn't quiet because of the antibiotics. He is quiet because he is very sick.

I am trying my best not to be rude but the guy you bought him from, which could very well be a puppy mill, does not know best. He knows that if you take him to the vet you will get the full report. In my opinion, it is kennel cough which is very common when young puppies are flown. I can't believe a breeder flew a yorkie out at 11 weeks. Yorkie breeders are reluctant to let puppies go at 12 weeks, I can't imagine flying alone at 11. Please do not take any more veterinary advice from the breeder. He is not a vet... Your vet went to veterinary school and knows what is best.

The reason he is quiet is probably due to the Torbugesic. This medication is used for pain and also for coughing. Here is a link with information:

If you think he is too sedated, you might want to speak with your vet about perhaps cutting back on the Torb. It is a great med for coughing ... I would think that after a couple of days on the antibiotic his coughing might decrease and you might not need to continue with the Torb.
