Hard nipples & lots of scratching??
 
Hey everyone! Aiko has been scratching the heck out of her tummy and sides since last night. I have checked her all over for signs of a bug bite or like red marks or anything and I cant find any. Her nipples have suddenly gotten hard and dry. Is there something I can put on them? I think that might be what is bothering her but I am really not sure. Any suggestions??

Could she be coming into heat or is she spayed? Maybe the change in seasons is making her itchy. Hope she stops soon. She is adorable.

We are pretty sure she is pregnant.. Would that cause it? I mean, she doesnt seem to be hurting and she is still playful so I am not sure if I should take her to the vet or not.

coconut oil is good and safe to put on dry skin so you can get some nutiva from whole foods. Are you taking her to the vet to see if she is pregnant? Hormones can definitely affect them for sure

we have taken her to 4 different vets and its to early to completely confirm it, but all signs point to yes. She is 3lbs and was a rescue, (I did NOT breed her.) but have been told she was tied on the 11th, 12th, and 14th of March. She is getting an xray done on the 26th of April.

omg 3lbs yikes - be ready for c section gf -- try the coconut oil it will definitely help and safe to lick too :)

yep, we are flying to Dallas to see Dr. Hawthorne closer to her due date. Everyone on here says he is the best! And I only want whats best for her! Thanks for the advise on the coconut oil! I will go get some!

Coconut products have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, just to name two of many. Shampoos with coconut oil extracts may be useful in calming the itches until a diagnosis can be made. Very good for skin and hair (coat).

Maybe you should call Dr. Hawthorne in the morning....let him know what's going on.....he'll be able to give you some advice.....bet you if you call between 8 and 8:30 in the morning, that's Central Time...he'll answer the phone.

I will because when I was about to put the coconut oil on her nipples, I noticed on 2 of them at the very root of them, closest to her tummy, were deep red spots. Like fire engine read. Not bumps but like bruises. I didnt put the oil on but I did take a warm wet washcloth and wipe her down and that seems to have helped a bit. She has been sleeping most of the afternoon and now evening. She has been eating good though and will play when I make her get up, so I am not super worried. But I kinda am, ya know??

I would put a cool cloth on her next time....keep some unsented baby wipes on hand. You might as well start buying a supply now....you're going to be using them anyway....wiping down those nipples to keep them free flowing and of course wiping her private area after she potties and her feet before putting her back in with the puppies...

She may have been bitting by something, check her ears to see if they're red...

Call doc...he may have you take her to the vet in the morning and more than likely want to consult with the vet.

ok I will. Thank you soo much for always being willing to advise me! I am treading water here and I want to do whats best for her. She has become intrenched in my heart and I just want to take care of her! I have been fostering dogs for years and she is the first one that I have bonded with like this!

I checked her all over, from top to bottom and back again, I dont see any red or bumps or any signs of irritation except for those 2 nipples. and she doesnt make any wimpering noises at all so I am not sure if she is really uncomfortable or if I am just going crazy here.

Oh by the way have you started purchasing supplies for that great important day? Since you're going to be at your sisters...you might want to just purchase and send them there.

I am only posting this as something else for you to ask your vet about. Last November, I changed my dog's food about the time she came into heat. She was never exposed to any other dogs (she actually had very irregular heat cycles as well), anyways, shortly after her heat cycle was over, she began to itch terribly like you describe, and her tummy was hot. I noticed, she had itched some of her nipples raw. So, after consulting people here, I changed her food back and also scheduled an appointment for her spay. At her spay, my vet stopped the surgery to call and tell me she was pregnant. I told him to look for something else because without a doubt, she was not exposed. Turned out, she had Closed Pyometra, a uterine infection introuduced during heat, but contained to the uterus because heat was over. Now, looking back, I do question all the itching being related to the pyometra rather than the food. They do say closed pyometra is difficult to diagnose, so I am just telling you this as something to ask your vet about as well. Good luck.

that is good to know as sometimes red and heat is due to infection so might be good to see a vet - I have no clue about heats, etc btw and mardelin i know is very experienced with this stuff but i think you might want to have her checked out.

Aiko is going to the vet in a couple hours to get checked out. He thinks it is probably just do to the salt on the ground from the snow we have had the last 2 days but is going to check her out anyway. Thanks for all the advise! I will update you all when we get back!
