Sophie is lethargic...and just seems 'off'.... I don't know what to do. My boss won't give me the night off (well, my mom is my boss and will let me stay home...but her boss is the one who is telling her I have to come in) so I can take my Sophie to the vet. Since about Sunday, she just hasn't seemed right. She has been quieter than normal (she's 9 months old...so this is unusual for her), barely wanting to eat, she shakes even when she is under blankets and wearing a sweater, I noticed green poop last night and her skin doesn't fully spring back (so I think she is dehydrated). She just seems to want to sleep and I don't know if this makes any sense, but she acts like she is in trouble all the time - timid, nervous, doesn't want to be held. I gave her some corn syrup because she has suffered from hypoglycemia in the past and it is all I have access to at the moment, and tried getting her to drink..but she just seems blah. She acts 'normal' once in awhile - like she was chasing our cats around last night and ate some of her baby food (she prefers it over regular dog treats/wet food). But then, she just went to sleep. I am just so nervous about her not being with anyone tonight. I work from 3-9 and I don't get home until around 10pm...and my fiance works from 3-midnight...so she will be alone. I am going to try to make an appointment with my vet (I only trust one in the practice, and she is usually booked) ... they typically are good with emergencies. I wasn't planning on having to spend money that I don't have (we are picking up wedding items this weekend), but money is no option when it comes to Sophie. I don't know why I am posting this...maybe for suggestions or ideas of what is going on with her. I will still be taking her to the vet, I just would like to hear other experiences. |
Dehydration can be fatal. If her skin is not immediately returning to it's normal position...it's a sign that of a serious situation. Being legarthic, depressed and blah and in response to being dehydrated. I highly urge you to get her into a vet's office where they can treat her with sub q fluids. |
I really think that's the only option now. Is she drinking? Dehydration can take them down very quickly. She should not be home alone right now. Maybe there is a vet in the area that can do a hospital board for a few hours? At least until she rehydrates since you'll be gone... |
We took Sophie to the vet this morning and it turns out she is just constipated and they have recommended trying canned pumpkin before prescription and to make sure she keeps drinking....if that doesn't work by tomorrow, she will be back at the vet on Friday morning. She just seems to be able to get her poop half way out and then she can't get the rest...so it comes down to her just having a tummy ache. I prefer natural remedies before actual prescriptions...and thankfully my vet acknowledges that for me and does her best to suggest natural before medicine. |
Final Update: Sophie is back to normal without the need for prescription, just some pumpkin, karo syrup and lots of mommy cuddles and she is no longer constipated. I am glad I found this website, my family thinks I worry too much about her and it is nice knowing that I was not being ridiculous being concerned. The vet told me to just keep an eye on her, and if it happens again to try the pumpkin and if that doesn't work she will start looking into some testing to make sure her digestive system and intestines are functioning properly. I had just recently switched her from Halo puppy food to a diet of Acana Pacifica in the morning and homemade at night. So we are hoping her tummy was just adjusting to that. |
It's good to hear that Sophie is doing better, a change in diet can do this for sure. Hope she stays happy and healthy.:):) |
could it be the change in fiber in the diet maybe, halo has 6.5% and the other probably 3 or 4% maybe |
