keep from scratching incision site Hey all - I just got home with my 5 month old yorkie who had heart surgery 2 days ago. She has an incision on her chest by her left front paw. We were told to keep it dry, and prevent her from scratching it and licking it and all that sort of stuff. We were given one of those e-collars that goes around their neck like a cone to keep her from biting it, but we have found that's not the problem. She can still get that back paw to it and scratch it like crazy!! Any tips on how we can help stop that?? We have her wrapped in an ace bandage to shield it, but they prefer it to be open to air I think. A sweater isn't an option, because she can still get that paw under the sweater and it keeps the incision covered. Any ideas/tips would be appreciated :) :aimeeyork |
Have you called the vet for a solution? Maybe you could wrap up the paw she's scratching with? |
We wrapped her in an ace bandage and put one of her little t-shirts over that. And it seems to help better. She's been preoccupied chewing a bone and hasn't been bothered with the need to scratch. I will call tomorrow if it continues to be a problem. |

Hope your little one has a quick recovery. It sounds like you could use a Kiss E collar - an extraordinary "E" collar made by YT Member Mom to Hot Rod. |
I would try a onsie to help protect the incision. Hope she heals quickly. |
I would definitely call the vet in the morning to see if they have any ideas! Be careful that the ace bandage does not get too tight! That can restrict blood flow. Wishing your puppy a speedy recovery! :) |
Thanks for the onsie idea! I gave her her nightly dose of prescription pain meds and that has her pretty loopy so I have removed the ace bandage for now and left on her little t-shirt. She is doing really good. She is running around, jumping, and wanting to play with her yorkie sister. You would never have guessed she just had heart surgery! It's hard restricting her activity when she feels good enough to want to play so much. |
