Inflamed Pancreas So I am newbie to YT and I don't yet have my own furbaby (I'm in nursing school=no time) but will someday. My question is really for my mother-in-law. Her furbaby Maxwell (aka Poopy), who is 10 years old, was diagnosed with an inflamed pancreas yesterday and put on starvation. She has to give him fluid injections and antibiotic injections twice a day. Does anyone have tips or suggestions on how to deal with this? :cry: Poor Poopy, he's so sweet. My husband has been Poopy's favorite since his parents brought Poopy home when my husband was a teenager and my husband is so worried about him. :( |
Pancreatitis is very common in Yorkies. Fasting is the only way to go. The amount of time fasted usually depends on the severity of disease. There is really nothing else that can be done unless your MIL wants to hospitalize him. He'll be given an IV there. His food will probably have to be changed for life. |
I'm sorry to hear about Poopy. Our Barney (who is also almost 10) just had a bout of pancreatitis as well. It was very painful. We did the subcutaneous fluids and antibiotics as well. We also opted to consult with a board certified veterinary nutritionist to get her diet recommendations. Barney will be going on a very low fat chicken based home cooked diet as this was the best option for him. I'm sure your mom's vet has told your mom that once he begins eating again in like 2 days, the meals need to be low fat (Barney was ordered to have bland white meat chicken and rice) and very small and gradual increases. This is a very painful condition for the dog - if your mom sees Poopy hunching over or acting like he is in pain, she should call the vet to get some pain meds if not already on it. |

Thank you guys for the wonderful advice. I saw my MIL and Poopy tonight, thankfully he looked much better. The medications and fluid injections have seemed to really work! Aside from being hungry, he was playful (as much as an 1 year old yorkie can be) and his regular self. My MIL said the Vet told her to only feed him boiled chicken, rice, and cottage cheese. No more treats like Cheerios or dog treats. Low-fat foods ONLY. I guess when he was a puppy, my Father-in-law would give him ice cream! Ah! Not good. So all is looking good and I think MIL is taking the right actions to help him. :) He has another appointment tomorrow, so we're praying for a good outlook! |

I just want to add that smaller portions -more often - are much better than two larger meals a day - at least for a couple weeks as he recovers. Two weeks after Bailey's episode - we went back to her regular diet - but cut-back on the snacks. Good luck! |
