why is he drooling? I posted in general but not getting any replies, so I'm here now. the last few days, my little guy has been drooling in his sleep. If he hangs his head over his bed there is a little puddle on the floor. He will be 11 months old next week. He doesn't seem sick, he is eating, drinking, playing like normal. What could be causing him to drool like this? Could it be his toothpaste? I have never seen a dog do this. |

I think you've learned that you should take your dog to the vet for tests, as this is not something normal. We are not diagnosticians, we can share our experiences and tell you things, like my dog does that and it's completely normal, or my dog does that and he had liver shunt. |
Drooling is most common with neurological problems, pain, nausea, and tooth problems. Since it's happening in his sleep, I'd look at tooth problems first. It couldn't hurt to get another bile acids test, esp. if the first one was done before 20 weeks. There are other neurological issues that could cause it too. It doesn't seem like these things would be worse while he is sleeping though. Has he lost all of his baby teeth? If he is older, are any of his teeth loose/gums inflamed? |

Drooling can also be from being nervous. Has anything different happened lately that can make him nervous? I see drooling sometimes when I groom a dog that is scared. I try to calm them down to help the drooling stop. |

he's better of course I took him to the vet. Had to wait until Friday, when I could get an appointment. Vet checked ears & teeth & couldn't find anything wrong. Saturday morning he was totally worse. The drooling was now constant, wouldn't eat or drink. Took him to the ER. They did blood work, nothing wrong no infection, pancreatitis, no liver problems nothing, a bit dehydrated. Did xrays on throat, stomach & stuff, nothing stuck anywhere. They sedated him so they could look in his throat. His little throat was red & inflamed. they gave medicine to coat his throat & IV for dehydration. He is o.k now but it took the weekend to get him back to normal. He had swallowed a bur on Monday that had been stuck in his hair (I didn't see it) He vomited it up in the afternoon that's is how I knew he ate it. But he seemed o.k. The bur had caused the throat problems & it just got so sore he couldn't swallow anymore by Saturday. |
oh wow - he swallowed a burr ? That had to hurt horribly and I'm so glad they really checked him over - that could easily have been overlooked. Glad he's feeling better !! The burrs are coming out here in Houston and I've never thought about them swallowing one - I have to check both mine after walks for the next few months like last year but ya - I can see how they'd swallow on trying to get it out of their hair - I hate those things |
Yup... I couldn't believe this is what was causing his problem, but when they asked "has he eaten anything different lately, or gotten into anything" the only thing was that darn bur. I usually brush him right after our walks, but Monday I was running late for an appointment, so I just put him in the kitchen & left again. I will never do that again. That bur scratched his little throat up pretty badly. I grew up on a farm & the dogs always had burs in their hair, nothing like this ever happened to them! |

Oh poor little guy, glad they found the problem, I guess all that drooling was the body's way of keeping the throat coated. So glad he's better! |
I'll have to watch mine now that Spring is here! You never know what they get into. I keep Calleigh's and Patti's coat long so, I'll have to watch out for burrs, etc. I'm sorry your little one had to go through all that to find the problem, but at least he'll be ok now. |
