Licking Paws Why does she do this? Do I need to take her to the vet? |

I am not a health expert, but I believe allergies seems to be the most common reason for paw licking. But, did want to add that my girl did this and I did not realize it was an early sign of something else - vasculitis. (Which is not very common.) |
I agree it is probably allergies. I had a Jack Russell who was allergic to grass. I had to wipe his feet off every time he went outside. |
I ran across this one day while searching for information. I was surprised to find an entire website devoted to paw licking! Dog Paw Licking and what you can do about it |
Very helpful website, thanks!!! |

sounds like allergies if between age of 6 mos and 3 years of age. When ours starts licking we go and wash her paws and blow dry and sometimes i put little socks on her to stop it and they have the skids on bottom so she does not slip on hardwood floors |

Also check www.pollen.com and enter your zip code - how are the pollens in your area right now? I live in Phoenix (aka, allergy central) - just notorious for human and animal allergies. My Marcel has allergies (pollens). Allergies, esp. in the beginning are a real pain - bc they can be from food, chemicals, pollens, dust, whatever - or a combo of things. For dogs though, only about 10-15% of allergies are from food -- so it's more likely to be dealing w/ enviro/seasonal. Paw licking and chewing is one of the cardinal signs of allergies. Is there any itching? How are the ears and eyes? The first steps are getting to the vet, and yup, ruling out that it's not due to anything else - and ruling in that the suspicion is allergies. If the suspicion is allergies -- then there are several OTC anti-hists dogs can try (have to try for at least 10-14d before trying a diff. one). If that does not work, there is Temaril-P, Atopica (this is what Marcel is on), steroids etcetera. If food allergies are suspected, then you have to do an elimination diet. However, if the symptoms took off when pollens also increased in your areas - you have a pattern (and clues) toward pollens right there.... |

zyrtec has been working well for alot of dogs - derm just told me to get zyrtec eye drops for dd as well |
By Wednesday, we will be at 11.0. I spoke with the vet Wednesday. He suggested Benedryl. She has been on it for three days. She hasn't licked her paws quite as much today. She goes to doggie day care once a week and plays outside. This may not be good for her, while the pollen level is up so high. I hate to have to stop her from going while the level is what it is. However, where I live (North Carolina), the climate is fairly mild and I think pollen is always around. I also am putting anti itch spray on her paws. She didn't do this last year. She was 6 mos then. Will she grow out of it? |
