Olive's sick AGAIN Olive is only 13 weeks old and this is her second respiratory infection. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I can do to prevent these? The vet said she probably caught it from another dog. She said she didn't catch it from me and it's not likely allergies or a relapse, because the last time she was sick was over a month ago. I'm just worried about my baby and I don't want her to keep getting sick. Any advice would help, thanks! |
I'm sorry to hear that. It really breaks your heart to see them sick. Has she been around any other dogs in the last month? Or has she possibly been exposed to cold and damp air at night so that she gets chilled and can't get warm? These are the only two questions I can think of. Your vet said she could have caught it from another dog, but you didn't say if she'd been around any others... |
We take a puppy class every week at Petsmart. We did go last week and met a lot of other dogs. Olive's very sweet and friendly with other people and dogs. I hate to have to limit her interactions in fear that she'll be sick. As for the cold, it was warm most of the week and suddenly yesterday, there was a dip in temperature. I still took her for a walk, but I don't know if she could get sick that quickly? |

I hope she starts feeling better soon. I am sure you know, if she hasn't had all her vaccinations yet that she shouldn't be near other dogs. I know you love to socialize her, but maybe ask your vet if she thinks it's too soon for her to be around so many dogs. That's all I can think of...hope it helps. :animal-pa |
In her puppy class, there's actually only one other dog, but I did walk her around the store and she walked up and greeted just about everybody. Her last shots are coming up on the 30th, she is up to date other than that. I guess I should limit her walking around until after the 30th. Thanks for the advice, I didn't even think about her having completed her shots. |
I would not take my puppy out and around other pups. There are too many things that they can catch. I have had my adult pups get sick from being around other pups.....so, I surely would not take a young puppy. There is plenty of time later on for socialization like this. Way too young in my opinion. |

Thanks, everyone. She's feeling a lot better already! After a few hours of antibiotics and napping with mommy, she's back to her old tricks. She's still obviously sick, but at least she has some spunk back. It makes me feel a whole lot better! |
Sorry to hear that! :( I'm one of those people that believes in early socialization and my vet agreed with me. However, I don't think a place like Petsmart is a good place to do it. There's been sooo many dogs in there, some who are ill (going to Banfield vet) and irresponsible owners. I luckily had friends and family with dogs who Jackson was able to be socialized early with but I understand not everybody has that luxury. Petsmart and dog parks can be dangerous for a lil' pup who is not fully vaccinated. |

Olive is only about 50% protected from deadly puppy diseases according to this study: In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs Yorkie puppies should stay with their mom and littermates until they are 12 weeks old, not go to Petsmart for classes. You shouldn't start puppy classes until puppies have had all their shots plus two weeks for full immunity, usually around 18-20 weeks. |
I agree. A lot worse could have happened. The last vaccine should be given at around 18 weeks (a lot of vets stiill say 16, but that may not be best). You should wait 1-2 weeks after the last shot to do any of this. It would be very unsafe to continue to take her. The company offering the classes should have known enough to tell you that this is the case since they deal with dogs all day. :( |
I wish I would have known... I definitely would have waited to take her to classes. I feel so bad for exposing her like that. :( |
