Sick Puppy almost 3 months old We purchased Samantha from a puppy shop on 03/03/10 at 8 weeks of age. The next morning we were in the ER & she was admitted. They said she had hypoglycemia and expected her to recover within 24 hours. Her glucose levels were fine after 12 hrs with IV & glucose meds. They weaned her off & within 6 hours she had regressed again & had glucose levels in the 50/60's again. They suspected underlying condition (upper respiratory infection) & put her on antibiotics. She finally recovered enough to come home 3 days after. Samantha's glucose levels were in the 130's a week ago. Yesterday we went back for a follow-up & they were down to the 90's (withing normal but huge fluctuation). She did not gain ANY WEIGHT:( Only weighs 1.20 lbs. We have been feeding her every 2-3 hours. At times she eats independently & at other times we have to force feed her. We have tried everything from baby food, a/d vet food, organic/holistic puppy/dog soft foods & the only thing she eats consistently (only a few pieces) is Royal Canin puppy kibbels for Yorkie puppies. She also love vita-cal & Karo syrup drops in her water (against Vet's advice). Waiting to hear from the Vet today for results on CBC (anemia, etc) & liver work up. It's been almost two weeks and we're so physically tired (lack-of sleep & stress of financial expenses almost $2000.00 in treatment so far). I have exhausted all my vacation to care for her but I'm just really not sure what else I can do... Can I feed her home made food? Please help with any ideas of what may help us help Samantha.:confused::confused::confused: Thanks, M |
I wouldn't be surprised if Samantha's liver values come back abnormal. Liver disease is genetic in Yorkies. In fact, Yorkies are 36 times more likely to be born with a liver shunt than all other breeds combined. Since you got Samantha from a pet store, she came from a puppy mill. Puppy mills don't do any health testing and regularly breed sick dogs. Can you update us when you hear back from the vet with her CBC results? Did they do a bile acids test? |
Sorry to hear about your little one. When I got Cali she had several hypoglycemic episodes and I had to make sure she ate every 2-3 hours at first and then every 4-5. She was a very sick puppy and I spent a fortune on her vet care. She ended up having very mild MVD or a internal liver shunt. She doesn't require any treatment and out grew the hypoglycemia. Hopefully your baby will be ok and the tests will give you some answers. |
I am so sorry that you are going through this with your new little one. I pray that everything is ok. Keep us posted!! |
I really hope that she is okay... How old is she, I noticed that you said she was almost 3 months, but then saw 8 weeks somewhere else - so I am confused. Please keep us updated! |
Awwe the poor little thing. I think she said she got her when she was 8 weeks and she's almost 3 months old now. I just got a new yorkie puppy and she's 3 months old and a few days and is 2 pounds 1 oz and I thought she was tiny! I can't imagine having to feed my girl every 2-3 hours. My girl has a broken leg and I have to give her medicine around the clock and feed her quite a bit as well and give her lots of attention. I'm exhausted too. It is exhausting. I make sure my girl eats 3 x a day - not as tiring as every 2-3 hrs. What type of baby food have you tried? My girl loves the Gerber Stage 1 baby food - Chicken and Chicken Broth and the Turkey (she'll eat it off a spoon or my fingers), she also loves Yogurt (live cultures - vanilla, plain and strawberry). The yogurt is great for them too, and she likes the By Nature Puppy Kibble-Dry food and the By Nature wet food. I also give her Nutri-Cal too with her food or rub some on her gums/mouth and she licks it up. Nutri-Cal is great for hypoglycemic puppies. She'll also eat small cut up grilled lean chicken and she likes Cheerios too. I got her a great organic health supplement called Pets & Vets that I sprinkle over her dry food along with Wheat Germ Oil. There are some great home-made recipes in the Nutrition section on this board too - make sure to check it out. Also, a pet bead heating pad is something that you may want to get. Keeping a hypoglycemic puppy warm is important. My girl has one in her bed and loves it! I hope your baby gets better soon and it's nothing too serious! |
