3rd Bile Acid Test?? When we went to have Sweet Pea spayed months ago her blood work showed she may have a LS. Her Post Bile Acid levels were a bit high. So the vet rx'd meds and special food. One month later we re-did the Bile Acid test and the post levels were down a little but still too high for the vet to feel comfortable enough to do the spay surgery. Now its been almost 8 months and we are re-doing the Bile Acid tests. This will be the last time we do this as these tests are NOT included in her puppy insurance and cost me $80.00 each time. I really want to have her spayed but NOT at the cost of her possibly dying. She is a little over 1yr and shows none of the signs of having a LS, plus after looking into the cost i know i could never afford it. If i was still working i would do it, but i was injured at work and now am on SSDI. |
What were her post numbers? Were they really high or just moderately high? She may not have a liver shunt but may just have MVD which can be controlled with a low protein diet and medication. Surgery is not even an option with MVD as it is many tiny shunts throughtout the liver. Dogs with MVD usually do pretty well on special diet. Please post the numbers if you know them. |
How high were her BAT numbers? Lucy has had two tests and her Vet says he is now comfortable doing her spay. Her pre number was less than 5 and her post number was 35 (last time was 41) and normal was 25. However, I asked him if he wanted to do a third one before her spay and he did not think it was necessary. I would do it, though, if he wanted because I wouldn't want to take the risk of losing her. Good luck. |
Sweet Pea's post BA was 30. Thanks all, Nicole |
30 is only slightly high... which could indicate mild MVD but is not indicative of a shunt and should be no reason not to go through with a spay. |
What is MVD? My good friends puppy has slightly elevated enzimes and they said not to worry, she should be fine. What is it? |
MVD is: microvascular dysplasia. I thought the post level was not too high either but this Banfield vet will not take the chance of putting Sweet Pea under anesthesia unless her post level goes down to the normal range. Since Sweet Pea has pet insurance through Banfield the spay would be free. Though since i'm now low income i could take her elsewhere. Thanks All |
Were the BATs done in house? It looks like it because they can only read "above 30." so it could be any number over 30 (31, 50, 100, 134, 387, etc. etc.). If it was sent to an outside lab and is consistently around 30, it is extremely likely that it is not a shunt and spaying (while using the right protocol) should be fine. Your vet can consult an internist to get their spay suggestions, etc. |
