Intentional Tremors
 
Does anyone know anything about Intentional Tremors in Yorkies? A few months ago i posted about TEddy having a seizure after a routine nail trim/vet visit. After that seizure, we ruled out LS issues and had nothing more happen until recently when Teddy had a second seizure (5 months after the 1st seizure).

We just switched vets so I asked my new vet for an opinion tonight when we took Teddy in for his rabies booster and exam. This vet thought maybe Teddy has Intentional Tremors and he also mentioned that he could have hydrocephalus. He is sending us on to a neurologist for a consult in the next month or so but I was wondering if anyone had any info. I havent begun to research this and thought I'd start here.

I know nothing about it... but i am boosting the thread. So many YTalkers here, hopefully someone will have useful advice or experience.

Hydrocephalus in Dogs

how old is he? I think a neurologist is best to check him out with seizure issues and liver shunt ruled out - if he is over 3 then could be epilepsy but if under three then neurological exam is a great start. Sounds like you have a good new vet that is on top of things

if having seizures make sure NO ROSEMARY in any treats or food that triggers seizures in dogs prone to them

also join a yahoogroups.com group called congenital dogs the owner had a hydrocephalus puppy

Interesting about the Rosemary ... i am always learning new things here .
Should Rosemary be avoided at all, or just for dogs who have epilepsy ?
I am an advocate for the dry food only ... but knowledge is never too much !

in dogs prone to seizures you need to remove any rosemary out of diet or treats as it can be a trigger - not just epilepsy but all seizure disorders

Yes the new vet seems great - so far, we're very happy. He did mention the hydrocephalus but based on the overall exam, seemed to think it was an intentional tremor over hydrocephalus which he said could be caused by an underdeveloped cerebellum (kind of like a person with parkinson's).

I think I'll make the appt with the neurologist and see what we learn.

Teddy is a young boy - 16 months old and he had first seizure at 9 months old and the second one at 14 months old. We do not have any treats or food with rosemary in it.

Teddy is currently on Wellness canned food (switched off Merrick as it had rosemary in it) and I'm planning to move him and Barney back to 100% home cooked this weekend.

i hope it is an easy fix but the neurologist will get to the bottom of it for sure as could be as easy as epilepsy and if epilepsy there is a great group for that and i think a no grain diet when they have that so first find out what is happening then you can go from there :) I have not heard of intentional tremors ever and i read alot so that one is new to me :(

but these above do not really sound like what you are describing and the above is in much younger dogs

I think you will get some answers from neurologist for sure
