my 7 year old with kidney failure what do i do I wasn't there for the apt it was my boyfriend that was there. Vet supposibly said she has 95 temp was extremely worried bout that and ran test and it was kidney failure. Vet automatically said to put her down. Instead of givin us thje options to keep her with us. What do I do? Where do I start helping her? Please help |
I am so sorry but I think I would certainly get a second opinion before making such a crucial decision. I wish you good luck. What tests were done to determine this outcome? |
Sorry your baby has kidney failure, mine was diagnosed at 10y and lived to almost 14y. She was on k/d diet and low protein treats. Her BUN and creatin levels we always elevated, but she did good and had a normal life. |
join this group immediately they are awesome and will help you K9KIDNEYS : for owners of dogs with Kidney Disease what do they think caused this ? what were the bun and creatinine values as that along with urine measure the kidneys was your dog on any medicines recently? |
Normal life? Was ur lil baby walkin around looking healthy? My poor lil girl is having trouble walking around and will stay laying down all day. I'm giving a call to vet and asking about the levels so I can discuss with you guys |
How long has she been ill? This just suddenly started? No warning signs or anything? |
I would get a second opinion or try getting her to a kidney specialist. They can do a lot for kidney failure these days. Good luck! |
Please get a referral to a Kidney Specialist for a second opinion. :( |
Any regular practice vet should be able to handle the treatment of renal failure. I would make an appointment with another vet for a second opinion since time is off the essence (it does not sound like this is something that can wait) .... internal med specialist is good, but honestly I don't know how a regular vet could not handle this. Of course that all depends on how severe this is. That temperature is worrisome. I am wondering what else is going on. Too many things we don't know here. |
She has always been thin but I noticed. A week ago she wasn't normal weight so I started cooking her chicken n rice thinking it was a upset tummy by sunday she wasn't getting out of bed but for food water n potty I am going to a different vet tom for a 2nd look |
UPDATE: I spoke to vet.. her temp was 95... BUN was over 130 and Creatine was 4.4....vet says she is at the very end of kidney failure.. 2nd opinion or the unthinkable... |
My Peppy was in kidney failure for years...when his levels got that severe he was given fluids to flush the kindeys...it really worked to lower those numbers......he also was on azodyl a probioitc that my regular vet has seen great success with this medication... One time he had to stay over night for fluids, but all the other times I gave him the fluids at home under his skin..... I would get another opinion or at least speak to your vet about fluids to see if they help.... |

I am going in the Am with her to vet again to a different one. I am keeping her hydrated as much as i can so she is okay for tonight. i will keep posted I want to fight for her life as long as she is okay to fight with me . |
Sending all my prayers and love for you and your baby. xoxo |
I lost Dixie my 7 month old yorkie puppy to congenital kidney failure. I took her to a kidney specialist and he thought he could help her but she had too little kidney function to survive. He did say he had a lot of yorkies in his practice that had been doing great for years with fluids and medicines. I hope you can get some better news tomorrow. |
I am sure the chicken made the numbers higher. Did the vet suggest a kidney diet? She absolutely needs that. Also....if her appetite is not good....ask the vet tomorrow about giving her mirtazapine. It is a wonderful drug for these pups in renal failure.....it does three things... cuts down the nausea, controls the vomiting and increases the appetite! I had a renal issue pupster and kept him alive for four years with good medical management. Even if they are in end stages, sometimes you can get some quality time with them...with good management. First, they need fluids to get those numbers down...then diet change. Do not give chicken...too much protein! The vet should suggest a kidney diet...they often say Hill's K/D...but I have found Purina NF to be more palatable for the pups. I will say prayers...hope tomorrow the vet comes up with a plan. |

here is the link and she goes to dr green as internal medicine but i will find out kidney specialist http://www.rbvh.net/ |
BUN was over 130 and Creatine was 4.4....vet says she is at the very end of kidney failure A second opinion would be best, sometimes it just confirms what you already know but, maybe another vet will offer, or see something the first didn't. I pray the second opinion goes well and the plan of care allows you more quality time with your baby... |
ok friend recommended a nephrologist at animal medical center in Manhattan - she said it is a woman- here is the link to her that woman in the picture is the nephrologist and nephrology is a specialist in kidneys Nephrology | Animal Medical Center |
Also, did the vet indicate why your Yorkie's temp is so low?? Normal temp for a Yorkie should be between 101 and 102 degrees. This alone sounds suspicious. I would definitely get a second opinion from a vet kidney specialist. Don't give up hope!!! |
