Can Livershunts be asymptomatic in a 8mo old yorkie female? does she need surgery? Can Livershunts be asymptomatic in a 8mo old yorkie female? does she need surgery? my 8 mo old yorkie that i adopted last month had normal ALT enzyme levels 1 mo ago 1 mo later alt levels were in the 800s and pre and post bile enzymes ABOVE 30 (no exact value) took her to an internal medicine specialist he wants to go portal scan (Scintigraphy) for the liver because he strongly believes its a shunt could it be a shunt? my dog is asymptomatic! i thoroughly read all the symptoms and she has absolutely nothing shes a happy little puppy. I am going to get her this scan but its 1030$... and her surgery is 3000-5000$ my question is if shes asymptomatic should i put her through all this suffering? |
I would repeat the bile acids test with a more accurate test first. http://www.cairnterrier.org/health/2...er_summary.php A Protein C test would be the next step after that before doing an expensive scintigraphy. The test has to be done at Cornell: Comparative Coagulation -- NYS Animal Health Diagnostic Center |
First of all, let's clarify this. You are saying that you adopted her, when in fact you purchased her from someone you had questions about from the beginning. There is a big difference! You have also said that vets in the Houston area are scammers. You further said that you go to Banfield and have also been to another vet (I believe you said another as well). If I were you, the first thing I would do is to find a good vet. I would be happy to recommend one depending on what area of Houston you live in. |
I just saw that you are in Katy. There is a member here from Katy ... I will PM her about this thread. Perhaps she can make a suggestion. I did see that you want an affordable vet....not exactly sure what you mean by that. Vets are not cheap! And, if you are dealing with a liver shunt, there are going to be huge bills. |
My Cali was about 8 months when she was diagnosed with a very mild MVD (internal shunt). Her Bile acid tests were 0/90 forst time and on restest 0/47 or around there. We did the ultrasound and liver biopsy(when she was spayed) to diagnose her. She had no symptoms and requires no medicine. I do try and keep her on a lower protein diet and her vet always takes her liver in to consideration when prescribing anything for her. I would do a retest and take it from there. Good luck! |
I did not purchase her I adopted her the lady was going to give her to the shelter. and who exactly are you to write all that? i posted a thread looking for opinion from people with experience keep your non related opinions to yourself ladyjane also i am seeing an internal medicine dr not banfield and the dr at banfield has 3 yorkies shes a good dr. again thanks for your nonuseful nonhelpful nonmeaningful reply |

Oh I see: So this thread was a person impersonating you I presume? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...i-buy-her.html You know, I was being nice to you and offering to help you find a good vet. Clearly I was mistaken.....You don't WANT help. You said you want opinions....well mine is that you are being rude to someone who actually WAS trying to help you (me) and that poor little puppy you purchased from someone "who was not a breeder". Your words...not MINE. :) In my world, purchase means just that...NOT adopted. :) |
I really think you are jumping the gun here and if you go through with the tests spending an unnecessary amount of money. I would put the dog on a low protein diet for 30 days and re-test the bile acids... find a vet who knows how to administer the test the right way and make sure beforehand that they are going to provide you with an EXACT number. Once you have an exact number in hand you can go from there. |
