Is this really necessary? The vet has prescribed ClindaCure (Clindamycin Hydrochloride liquid) twice a day for Buster. This stuff tastes NASTY! I went to CVS and the pharmacist put some flavoring in it but it still tastes nasty. Is it really necessary to give this? The vet also prescribed Ketofen syrup which is not bad at all. The ClindaCure is "for therapy of wounds, abcesses and dental infections". Buster had two baby teeth extracted (that should have been removed almost two years ago when he was neutered) and a cleaning. I might get one dose in him but I doubt if I will get much more. Has anyone had to give this? Is it really necessary? |

I would why they didn't just give Clavamox. Can you put it in some canned food? |
According to my Vet and my own Periodontist( I called her to check) Clyndamicin is the only antibiotic that penetrates the tooth and bone area making it the choice in regards to dentals. After Milo had his dental a few days later he wound up with a UTI we took him off the clynda and switched to clavamox. He will start back up in 3 weeks with the Clynda for his teeth. |
Clindamycin is the antibiotic of choice with dental issues. I always ask for the tablets...they are tiny and easy to disguise in whatever you use for pills. That liquid is awful and the poor pups shake their heads and spit it out. |
Pre and post op, Ellie was put on Clavamox for her oral surgery. She had some very major issues and it worked fine. Clavamox is approved in the treatment of periodontal infection. Not that it is necessarily better than the other and not that it would work in this case (I have no idea), but it is another option if this isn't going to work. I'd probably do what LadyJane suggested and try the pills. |
I have used it before... just shoot it down the throat and give them a treat after. |

My thoughts exactly.... I'm going to call tomorrow and see if I can get the pills. |
I always had better luck using the dropper to put it down their throats than getting a pill down. I can't tell you how many pills got spit out after being wrapped tightly in food!:D Anyway, I was just going to say to be careful of the clindamycin (whatever form it is in) because it can cause tummy upsets especially if they have a delicate tummy to begin with. It is the same with people. It would be best to give a little food first. |
