Yorkie puppy having seizures!!! We have a 3 month old yorkie that we got at 5 weeks old which I know is way to young but his living conditions were horrible he was covered with fleas and the owners least favorite. We have spent lots of money and time turning him to the healthy happy puppy he is now. Today we took him to the vet his third visit for grooming. The when we picked him up the groomer said that he had a seizure during grooming. He has never had anything like this happen before and the vet and groomer said they didnt know why it happened to just keep an eye on him. He acted fine when we got home and played for an hour then we layed down in the bed and both fell asleep. The phone rang and startled him which sent him into a seizure where his body was completely rigid and shaking badly and was urinating and foaming at the mouth. I rubbed some karo syrup on his gums as they were pale white during, and he seems fine and is eating and drinking and playing but if he was hypoglycemic wouldnt we have noticed before now? The vet is not answering there phone which im not sure of anyways as he never had problems before today. |
get him in and get him bile acid tested and blood run on him to rule out liver shunt :( what percentage of protein are you feeding? My other worry is was he dropped :( if this never happened before or it could be liver shunt due to age and breed :( |
did he ever act wierd after eating his food? |

Wow, that's scary, you don't say how much he weighs, but it's possible it could be a hypoglycemic episode. Many breeders recommend free feeding during the early months, so that blood sugar never gets too low. Just active playing can cause blood sugar to drop too low, and you must remember that stress can do the same thing. It's possible that the day was too stressful, but I've never read of such a severe reaction, others can tell you more. I hope your baby's is ok, and good for you for the quick thinking and using karo syrup; white gums are very serious. Be sure he gets some food that has protein in it, the karo syrup can raise blood sugar too much and another hypoglycemia attack can occur in a few hours. |
I am curious. Has this vet seen him before and done baseline blood testing? Has he had any shots? |
He has all the scheduled puppy shots and he has been to the vet 3 times but the groomer is not a vet but works in the vet office. nothing like this has happened before and he has always ate and drank normally he has been on Benieful healthy puppy for a month and a half and sleeps through the night and plays all day. He weighs 4and half pounds. My first worry was maybe the groomer dropped him and they are trying to cover it up. The vet just returned my call and said there was nothing to worry about. |

I would wonder about him being dropped myself if he has never had a problem before. The vet knows he is having seizures and said it is nothing to worry about??? That sounds very strange to me. He did not say that the puppy should be seen or anything?? |
Honestly, since your vet is not concerned, I would think about a second opinion. You really need to find out WHY this puppy is having seizures. If he continues having seizures tonight, I suggest you take him to an emergency clinic. If he is ok through the night, I think I would seek a second vet's opinion tomorrow. I am just shocked that your vet blew it off like that. |

He is actually my girlfriends dog that I got for her for Christmas, I never liked small dogs but have fell in love with this on and he changed my whole thought process. Since the vet told me its not a big deal even if he has more tonight and tomorrow and to bring him in in 3 or 4 days if it continues, we have already decided to switch vets and take him to another one in the morning. I was just hoping for a similar experience and someone saying dont worry it happened to me and mines fine. It sucks to see your 3 month old puppy having what is now confirmed to be a grand mal seizure. Before today he was a ball of energy and totally healthy ready to growl and bark and play every minute of the day, which he was right back to doing when we got him home and 5 minutes after the one he had on our bed. |

Also I forgot to say that my now old vet told me on phone tonight that he could not be startled into a seizure even though in my opinion that is exactly what happened is this possible and I think the groomer used clippers for the first time today where she usually uses scissors, this could have scared him and dropped his blood sugar which caused the first one and his blood sugar was still low when we brought him home which is why the phone ringing when he was asleep startled him into the second one. This is just my theory from all the research I have been doing, Is this possible? The groomer has a rule that you have to drop them off by 9 A.M. and pick them up at 2 P.M. so they know how many they have is this normal practice, or is it in case they do something wrong they have time for the dog to heal up or act better? |

shame on that vet for blowing this off sounds guilty to me like he knows what happened and hoping it will just go away |

No I have not heard of them being startled into another seizure before -- I think this sounds like head trauma to me as it is not occuring after food and has never occured before. Your dog would have to be really bad to be a hypoglycemic seizure as mine had hypog when i first got him and he just layed on his side and was very lethargic but he never had violent seizures - we rubbed his gums with honey gave him pedialyte and he bounced back no prob. If your dog was prone to these episodes he would have had them before I think especially since you have taken him to this groomer before - why has this not happened before :( Please have him checked out asap and get a new vet :( |
