My older yorkie Hey everyone, need your opinion. My oldest yorkie is 12 years right now (13 in april). Lately she has been moving slower and it's getting harder for her to get up and down steps. I just figured old age. Now she is, I guess arching her back. You know when a cat arches there back upwards? That is what she is doing but she leaves it there. She doesn't relax from it. Then later she will be normal and then she will do it again. Any ideas? |
Another Question What kind of signs do they give you, if they are in pain? |
i am sorry i am no help...i would suggest taking her to the vet....just to get it checked out....most dogs can hide their pain well... |
I would have your vet check her out. As my dogs get older I have yearly blood work done to keep an eye on things. It sounds like she may have some tummy problems as mine arch their back when their tummy hurts or could be some arthritis. Hopefully the vet can find out the reason. Hope she feels better soon. |

Do you have her on a joint supplement? Old dogs get arthritic changes in their joints and spine just like we do. Cosequin has made a huge difference in Lady's quality of life. |
Agree with what the other posters have mentioned including dogs can hide their pain very well (part of survival in the wild) and yearly (or more if affordable) blood work to catch any values that might be getting out of range. When I took Zack and Zeke in for their annuals (they are 4 and 3) I mentioned that Zack was drinking more water than the other two and I had a concern. Good news was the blood work was very good with no high or even moderately high values. Vet suggested to keep an eye on him tho since drinking too much water can change eletrolytes(sp) etc. Having had to lay two yorkies (13 and 7 1/2) to rest jan 08 due to kidney problems I may be too cautious but the kids are worth it. |
Arching the back is definately a sign of pain usually abdominal pain |
My 13 year old was just doing that last week, and walking a bit stiff. I checked his anal glands, they were only very slightly filled, but I expressed them anyway. That did it! Arched back gone, walking normally and a bit of running. One happy boy!:D Of course, if that isn't her problem, it could be a number of things, best to see your vet as they can test to see what the problem is. |
