My chi ate DEOXIDIZER
 

Ok, what is DEOXIDIZER? I have no clue. It was in a packet that said DO NOT EAT that helped keep my jerky treats fresh. My big dog knocked the package down off the counter and pulled out most of the treats including the packet of DEOXIDIZER which helped keep the jerky fresh. This happened on Saturday night. I called the local vet and they said that she would probably just have some dihareha(sp?). So Sunday was fine, no problems. Than early this evening, I noticed that there was vomit on the carpet. I have 6 dogs, so it is hard to pinpoint who did what, but my chi was the closest to it and seemed to be 'droopy'. Then she went potty and I noticed that her BM was very VERY runny so I went to check it out and and it was basically mucus with blood! So I called the vet and she said that I should try to give her nutri-cal, didn't want it; try to give baby food; no go. She has dranken some water and pottied again runny BM. She said that if I could hold out the night she would see me first thing, but if it did get worse, to take her to the local ER. So here I am waiting, wondering. Am I over reacting? Am I not reacting enough? My husband went out and got a thermometer for her and she has a normal temp. Are there ANY VETS on this board?

i dont think we have any vetrinarians here..... we had a few vet assistants but i forgot who they were........ sorry :( i hope she will be ok, make sure she is hydrated with lots of water, or you could try pedialyte ...... pumpkin usually makes the BM's a normal consistancy, but with her tummy problems shes probably not up to eating much, is she? :confused:

Well, I ended up going to the ER last night. They tested her for Parvo and gave her a shot of fluids in her back. It made her look like a camel. They wanted to keep her in for observation and put an IV of fluids in her. But when all was said and done, that would have cost me $600!! So I decided to test her for Parvo and go from there. I ended up spending $300 instead. I hate to sound like a cheap skate, but since I was going to my own vet today, I would rather spend it there with a faculty that knows my dog and knows me.
She seems much better today. Walking around, going potty on her own, etc. She drank a little water, but still isn't intersted in any food. I go in today @ 9.

Just to update you all. Abby is doing 100% better tonight. You would never know she was sick. She has already eaten 3 jars of baby food! After the Dr. this morning, they wanted keep her for the day for observation. They told me to call around 5 to get the day's report. Well, I got a call around 1 saying that Abby was ready to go home. She was trying to eat the bars on the cage they had her in and they were aftraid she might break a tooth!! Obviously, her chi spirits were up again!

She is on anitbiotics for a week and baby food for a few days so as to not upset her stomach.

Thank you all for lending me your shoulders. It is really comforting to know that I have friends out there that understand me.

So glad she is doing better! Dont you hate those moments where you know they are probobly fine(and 1 hours later the vet confirms it but you are out hundreds of dollars) but you cant risk it? I hate makign judgement calls. My old Min Pin once ate a stupid posionous house plant and projectile vomited blood. Well I started freaking out(didnt know it was a house plant at the time so I was thinking he had some major diesese). Well of course 30 minutes later he was just fine and dandy and was playing with the other dogs.... Dogs can be so crazy. But I am so glad your chi is feeling better!!! :)

A deoxidizer keeps food fresh by removing the oxygen in the food container. Probably not as harsh a chemical as the kind that removed moisture, as is packed with some pills, but still--it's removing oxygen, so it has to be bad for any organism that requires oxygen to live! Glad to see that your furbaby is doing better! :)
