Duchess has bloody diahria and is vomiting -- Help! Hi All, Please help! I just got my baby from another YT poster on Sunday. When I picked her up, she had thrown up but the breeder said she thought Duchess had gotten car sick. Then she threw up again on the way home. Seemed okay on Monday, but on Tuesday, I noticed she was constipated. I thought it might be because the breeder had forgotten her food, and after visiting three stores in the area I still couldnt find the brand she named, so I bought Royal Canine Indoor Puppy, as I heard it was a good quality (from YT research ;) ) Anyway, I didn't have any wet food or pumpkin so I gave Duchess just two tablespoons of skim milk (I read a little bit is okay for this purpose). This morning Duchess got up and when she went potty I noticed it was covered in a bloody mucus. After that I noticed her tummy was gurgling badly and she kept squatting to go poopers, but only clear liquid with blood would drop out. <sigh> Being a good puppy mommy, I called the vet and they said to bring her in "just in case". It turns out Duchess has a bad case of ear mites which has caused a yeast infection AND a intestinal bacteria infection! The vet told me to watch her and keep fluids in her. If she got lethargic or didn't drink to call them and bring her back in because they would need to put her on an IV. <sigh> He said that depending on how long she had been sick that she might have intestinal problems for the rest of her life. SO... I get home, and she throws up all over me. She is drained on energy, wont eat, wont drink... then throws up three more times. So I called the vets office and get the receptionist. I remind her that the vet told me to call if she got lethargic and wouldnt drink. She says, Just watch her. I ask if there is anything I should be looking for... she says, "No" I am watching Duchess carefully and she did get up and wonder around for about two minutes then flopped back in my lap. Any help I could get from you would be greatly appreciated! I am sure I am over reacting, but I am worried. Help please!!! PS I called the breeder, she had no idea the baby was sick and I believe her. So please be kind. ;) |
I'm so sorry that Duchess is sick and that you are going through this. Someone with far more experience and knowledge than I have will be able to advise you. Did your vet give you anything for the ear mites, yeast and intestinal problems? I understand that you had no choice about the food change, but I'm guessing the sudden change is contributing to your baby's problem. |
More questions that might help more knowledgeable people help you: What food was the breeder feeding? What food/treats other than RC and skim milk have you given Duchess? |
i think she needs to be brought to the vet. she is too tiny to be throwing up and having diarrhea. |
dogs can be lactose intolerant so i would not give milk that can make diarrhea worse did they do a fecal? What did they give you for ear mites? |

Give her some karo syurp on gums & call & talk to vet ASAP. That little baby needs fluids...... |
Had to do little looking around. Only know what I've read here on YT. Little yorkies can get whats called hypoglycemia, which is low sugar if their not eating/drinking. Also from vomiting & pooping. So rub karo syrup on gums. If you don't have karo, use sugar water. Need to get her sugar levels up. I'd call the vet, talk to "him". The help hasn't been to vet school. Keep us posted & good luck. |
Update - I have called the vets officer AGAIN and left a message with the service. If they dont call me back, I looked up another vet in the area and am calling them in 30 minutes if they haven't called me back.... I'll try to answer all the questions, here goes; 1)Yes, I did get an antibiotic as well as Mitaclear for her ears. 2)The Breeder was feeding Duchess Diamond Naturals, but I couldnt find it at Petsmart, Petco, or Walmart here... hence the need to switch 3)Dutchess has a bully treat and a Puppy Kong but she hasn't used either one. She seems to prefer Ellie the Elephant (a pink plush squeeky elephant). I do not believe in feeding pets people food. So the only thing she as eaten is the RC, water and about 2 tbls of skim milk (which was yesterday- it was just the one time) 4)I have the nutrical and did put some on her gums as suggested. I also used the dropper to put some water in her mouth since she wont drink from her bowel. I'm not sure how much got in her, but at this point a little is better than nothing, don't you think? I will keep you updated... (I still can't believe the receptionist blew me off! Boy I'd like to give her a piece of my mind!!!) |
I completely understand how you feel on wanting to wait...BUT she needs to get to a vet right away...she needs fluids now...You are do the right thing with the nutrical for sure..But please get her to a vet ASAP..I hear that puppies can get go down hill really fast...I really hope your furbaby gets feeling better. |
I hope your vet calls back. If not, maybe you should take her to an ER vet tonight. Please keep us posted. |
Because puppies can go down hill quickly, an ER visit may be necessary. Are her gums pink? PediaLyte or PediaSure would be good if she can hold it down. |
Are her gums WET? That is how you check for dehydration. If her gums are sticky to touch, she is dehydrated. A puppy with vomiting and diarrhea needs to be seen by a vet. If this is continuing, you really need to get her into an emergency clinic tonight. Also...I would not give her any milk! |
Updates on Duchess? |
Sorry for the delay in posting the update. It has been an incredibly long day. First and most importantly, thank you so much for all the wonderful advise last night. The vet said if I hadn't forced the water into Duchess, or used the Nutri-cal on her gums, she might not have made it. Thank you for helping me save my baby! Very long story short, Duchess had complications from her bacterial infection. Because she wasn't eating or drinking she declined VERY fast. She is such a tiny baby, it doesn't take much. Today she is doing much better, running around and being very playful. Wish I had nearly as much energy! I think I need toothpicks to keep my eyes open. The vet says we are not out of the woods yet. We have to wait until next week to do a few more tests to see if she has perminent damage to her intestines. But we are optimistic! Thank you everyone for your suggestions and kind support Kimberly & Duchess |
