Gas and constipation, possibly
 
I know this question has been asked before and I'm looking through the old threads for answers...and I posted in the health & diet section:

Maximo is showing signs of great discomfort, arching his back, holding his tail up in a strange way. He has not eaten anything out of the ordinary today. The only thing different that he could have ingested is salt on the street while we were out walking this morning.

I checked his rear end and I don't see any signs of trouble. His abdomen feels firmer than usual, but it isn't distended. Poor guy can't get comfortable in his bed. He keeps jumping up and running to different parts of the room. The he comes back to bed and turns round and round.

I tried taking him out for a short walk to see if that would help work out his problems. He appeared fine and barked energetically at another dog and walked briskly. I brought him back inside because I was worried about overdoing it.

Any suggestions for what I should give him for possible gas and constipation?

aww poor guy.

First I would say canned pumpkin- that stuff is a miracle worker with constipation AND diarrhea- go figure ;) It has to be the pure type, not spiced.

I would also try a warm bath if he will let you.

After the pumpkin see if he will go for a walk to get things moving however the pumpkin should fix the problem rather quickly.

Thank you for all of the good suggestions. I remembered what you had told me about pumpkin before so I went to the store and bought some. I gave Max 1/4 tsp pure pumpkin about 20 minutes ago. He keeps moving around and putting his rear end on the floor like he is in a lot of pain.

I hate seeing him suffer. :(

Oh he will need much more than that- 2-3 tsps if you can. You can't hurt by giving him too much- Layla used to eat it daily in her meals- so give him a bit more.

lol i am always on YT :p

I'd give him an hour or so to see if it is working- if not- give him more. And try and get him walking if you can- gets things moving.

A bath is probably not feasable- beacuse then you have to blow dry but if you can put a warm compress on his belly might help soften up whatever is in there and having a hard time moving...

Going for a run but will check in when I get back- let me know when we have poop :D

did you check his anal glands they are to the side of his anus -check to see they are swollen usually that causes them to rub their butts on the floor

He isn't scooting or rubbing his behind, but I had checked the back end earlier today just in case. Everything looks good back there.

He is crouching and contorting when he sits down. The he presses his belly against the floor and writhes around until he can get comfortable, which lasts maybe a minute.

At least he was smiling after the pumpkin, and his restlessness is slightly diminished.

lol glad he was smiling :) hopefully you will see some "movement" soon!

Poor baby. I'm not at all suggesting that you do this but just for my knowledge if this happens to my little one at what point would you go to the vet? All the ideas posted sound very intelligent and I hope Maximo feels better really soon!

Thank you for the well wishes. We are still on poop watch, waiting for some relief.

I would go to the vet if I started to worry about pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, or anal gland impaction/rupture:

1) gums turn pale
2) dog does not appear alert
3) dog shows signs of dehydration
4) vomiting
5) no poops for certain amount of time (by tomorrow in my case), or blood in the stool

does he seem to be in any less pain? do you hear his tummy making noise?

I don't hear any tummy rumbling, but he does seem to be relaxing a little bit more.

We can't go outside for a walk because it is too dark and icy, so I ran around the house and had him chase me for a couple of minutes.

A warm bath I fear would be too stressful for him since he just had a bath yesterday. He did let me hold a warm moist towel to his belly and massage his back legs.

Around 10 pm is our usual pre-bed playtime and he usually poops afterward. I'm hoping things will work out by then.

glad to hear he is relaxing- hopefully he will have his 10 pm poop. Feel free to give him a bit more pumpkin before his 10 pm play session.
