Enlarged heart
 
I have a 9 yr old Yorkie and was told by Vet she has an enlarged heart with fluid surrounding. We took her in when we noticed short, shallow breathing along with swollen tummy. She has always been very active and had rather run after toy than eat. My husband and I were under the mistaken impression that activity was good for doggies as they age, as it was for humans. I was unaware that letting them play too much for too long could damage their heart. I feel like the worst mother ever. Do any of you have an experience with this? She is now on lasix, enalapril, and something for upset stomach.

pm her she is not on as much but she will talk with you as she has alot of experience with heart - hopefully others will post to help you as well

don't beat yourself up this is not your fault health issues happen and I doubt this was from playing too much plus you want your pup to have a normal happy life and playing is part of that :)

Please do not blame yourself for this. Many yorkies have enlarged hearts and some do end up with cardiac problems.

I seriously doubt it had anything to do with her playing!

I am sure he advised that she not exercise now because of this condition, but that does not mean that exercise caused this.

I will say a prayer for her. Please keep us updated. Many yorkies do well on medications and I am hopeful your baby will as well!

Thanks to everyone for prompt response and most especially for prayers. I have not been on the web site for a long time so have a lot of catching up to do... I love all dogs, in all breeds, shapes and sizes, but Yorkies are my heart! Again thanks for the support.

As it turns out, the enlarged heart was found incidently, but is not what is causing the problem at this time. She has lymphangiectasia and the PLE is her immediate concern. The Vet has given her various treatments, among them are antibiotics, fluids and plasma, also has her on daily calcium shots, and prednisone. In addition she was on a special high calorie/protein canned food but has now begun to eat again and has finished that and is back on eating her regular Science Diet.

Right now she is doing well, she is active and playing, full of energy (from the predisone probably). As you probably know the outlook is guarded but for now she is doing well.

Again thanks for all your help and kind words.

did her blood work show low protein, cholesterol and calcium as that is how they diagnose lympangastecia?

ok as some vets have diagnosed lymphangastecia without these being on blood work and they should definitely be on the blood work and it runs in dogs that have ibd so if the ibd gets severe enough it can lead to this. Our vet mentioned it to me about my dog having ibd and colitis issues and i said NO WAY her blood work is perfect so no way it could be that and our vet has a phd from ucdavis so go figure. It turned out to be clostridium and i put her on probiotics and she is fine since the day i put her back on probiotics.

i found out that pharmaceutical companies were doing seminars on this disease so i think some vets including ours are looking for it lolllll so wanted to make sure yours was not so sounds like your vet has the blood work to back the diagnosis unlike some :(

so glad she is doing well sounds like you have a GREAT vet as plasma is helping better than hepastarch which many use for this so glad your vet went to the plasma - plasma is an amazing thing it saved my dogs life

many on here use Holistic Veterinarian Pet Nutritionist Holistic Pet Care regarding diet and one who really likes her - her dog has ple so you may want to do a consult and check i out and contact luvmysissy on here as her dog has this and so does bleuboy on here who almost lost her dog a few months ago to PLE - their dogs have PLE not lymphangecstasia but it is similar as both lose protein

there are 4 causes of ple

There are four chief causes of protein-losing enteropathy:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Histoplasmosis (a fungal infection)

Intestinal Lymphosarcoma

Intestinal Lymphangiectasia

so the vet has to rule out all 4 and not jump to just one because if you give prednisone to a dog that has histoplasmosis you are going to have a big problem as it will lower immune system thus causing fungus to take over so before doing steroids that has to be ruled out

My 9 year old yorkie is in the hospital now with the same thing, and same medications. She also is in kidney failure, and also has hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. She is my love and life. She has never been real active, only 5-10 minutes at the time. I think the enlarged heart and stomach problems are pretty common to yorkies. While I'm praying for my love, I will pray for yours.
