Do I Have a Sick Puppy? Maddie has thrown up twice tonight and had diarrhea a couple of times too. Her poops were normal this morning...it was just later this evening when she had the symptoms. She acted like it hurt when she had the diarrhea too. The first time was semi-solid then really runny...just in one area. I heard her yelp a little later and she had diarrhea in the kitchen and in our bedroom (which is close to the kitchen). I don't know of anything weird that she has eaten today. I did give her a new treat that she had never tried before...could this be what is wrong with her? Also, a bad diarrhea/vomit virus is going around here (human). Can she get that? I haven't been around it that I know of, although I did go visit a family member that was in the hospital for an unrelated illness. Is there anything that I should be doing for her? This is the first time that she has ever had diarrhea/vomit (well, she did throw up during a car ride, but I'm assuming that was from being carsick). She is 14 weeks old. Thanks for any help. I am going to make sure she drinks water. She also doesn't act funny or like she feels sick and she isn't laying around or anything. She has been playing...she did take a nap, but that isn't unusual. |
I have no advice (I am sorry) but I can say, if ever in doubt PLEASE go to the Vet ER. Hopefully someone with more experience will be here soon to guide you. |

My vet always advises starving them of food and water for 24 hours, sounds cruel but will give her tummy chance to rest. If it keeps up take her to the vet. Hope she's better soon love. Hugs Shirl x x |

Have you check to see if her gums are pink? |
A little more information would be helpful. How long have you had her? What is her weight at 14 weeks? What food has she been on, and have you changed foods recently? What is her vaccination status (esp. Parvo)? Has your vet checked puppy stool samples for coccidia and giardia & worms? Is there blood or mucus in the diarrhea? Lots of people on here give pups a little plain (not spiced) canned pumpkin for diarrhea, and for constipation too. But the vomiting makes it more of a question. Don't wait too long before calling a vet, as young puppies can go down really quick if something is wrong. We are all just a bunch of dog owners/lovers, and our guessing is no substitute for a vet diagnosis. Better safe than sorry. Be sure to update this thread too, cause we all do worry about the sick ones. |

Baby plain Pedialyte is great for replenish her electrolites when vomiting and diarreah, hold food for 4 hours, feeding her 2cc's of pedialyte every 2 hours. you can give her 1/4 of a teaspoon of kaopectate for the diarreah. if this does not make her improve in 4 hours I would take her to the Vet. |
How big is she? One of the best bits of advice I have gotten from the gurus on this forum is to always have a tube of Nutra cal on hand and if that is not available Karo. When mine were little when ever they were looking a little sluggish out came the Nutra cal and I rubbed a little on their gums. They are 5 now and I still keep a tube in the refrigerator just in case. As Carmen has said Pedialyte is also good but it is sometimes difficult to get them to take when they are vomiting. The diarrhea could be from the new treat but the vomiting changes the picture. Is it vomiting or just yellow green bile colored from an empty stomach? I would contact your vet and get his/her advice. Owning a yorkie you should have your vet on speed dial or in your favorites on your cell phone. Please keep us posted on how your baby is doing |

the prob with water is they vomit drink water vomit the water up and the cycle will not stop if bad enough so you have to stop the vomitting cycle from occuring so the tummy can rest. Now if a tiny and vomitting alot I would get them in asap - my vomitting dog is 10lbs so he can go a while without getting dehydrated- these little ones can get dehydrated much faster then you have a big problem as dehydration shuts all the organs down :( My aunt died of dehydration she was vomitting alot and she told my uncle to go in the other room to not keep him awake and the next morning he came in and my aunt was dead it was horrible and since that it scares me - the coroner ruled it cause of death due to dehydration had she went to hospital that night she would still be alive :( |

I know with puppies and or tinies - a vet is def the place to go - their little bodies have to work so much harder and they dehydrate much faster edited to add - no more of those treats either - there's so many that mess with their tummies and if you gave her something new - it very well could be that - but you need to keep a close eye on her and be ready to go to the ER if you need to (since it's Sunday) |
