Is this an emergency?? This is my first experience with a sick puppy so I'm a bit lost! My male Yorkie, Bo, is almost 7 months old and weighs almost 4 pounds (I got him in September). He has had diarrhea since Tuesday. I called his vet yesterday and he gave him special canned food (bland diet), pulled him off his regular kibble (IAMs) and had me give him Pepto Bismol (4cc) last night, and this morning. He has had 2 or 3 solid BMs now (dark greenish and slimy) and has acted great all day. Ate and drank vigorously. Starting about 30 minutes ago he has thrown up about 15 times. No foul odor. The food all came back up about like it went in. He is now heaving and producing a somewhat foamy mucous. He has all of his immunizations, doesn't have exposure to other dogs (except last Sunday. We went to my mom's and Bo went outside once to potty. They have a yellow lab. The dogs never interacted, and the lab is healthy as far as I know. Also the lab doesn't do his business in the yard where my Bo was.) Is this an emergency? I didn't give the Pepto tonight. Can this wait until Monday morning when his vet is in? He did just drink some water and has kept it down for 10 minutes. I had errands in town most of day so took him with me in his kennel. He did great, but could he just be stressed out? He usually doesn't like to go in the car but I have been working with him the past week to get him over the whining. Did it bring on the diarrhea, etc? He is quite a little drama queen. Thank you so much for any insight! |
I would not wait . He's tiny and can dehydrate quickly. |
15 times in one night??? This should not wait. He may be very dehydrated by now. |
Sudden food change can upset their digestive system. It causes diarrhea but IDK what would cause green #2's. Do you think he ate something green? Plant, grass, some treats are colored green...It is a concern that he's vomitting tho, if it were my dog, I would take him to the ER. |
Yes. 15 times. He produced his "special" food (undigested) the first 4-5 heaves. Then water for the next several heaves, then down to the mucous. He has stopped now. This all took place over about 30-40 minutes. Sounds more like a dry cough now. The drinking of water was encouraging as he did keep it down.... Thank you for your advice! |
If he continues to throw-up/dry heave even after drinking water, take him to the ER right away. It could be a blockage. |

I think you have been given very good advice here... If it were me, I would take my furbaby to the ER. It is better to be safe than to be sorry for something later. JMHO I hope you are able to find out what it is and get your little one better. |
diarrhea is much more dehydrating than vomitting. I am not a fan of pepto at all it has a form of aspirin in it sulcrulfate is pepto without the aspirin in it which is safer for dogs. They changed the formula to pepto so some old timers still use this but i just do not think it is safe :( the foamy vomit means the stomach is totally empty no more bile left |
when a dog is vomitting over and over again you have to withold water until the vomitting stops or the cycle will keep going the stomach has to rest then you slowly on your finger add water with such a little one though you have to feel gums if stick and back of neck if skin does not bounce back on a pinch go to er as they can go down fast. I have a 10lb boy and he just went through this vomitting a week ago and it is scary but he is bigger so he can last longer without fluids. My concern is pancreatitis if vomitting that much :( I hope the vet did not give i/d food as that has pork in it and my pancreatitis dog relapsed on that food and sounds to me the combo of food and pepto sent him into a tail spin :( |

If he threw up the food whole his small intestines is inflamed and he could not digest the food past that point and this can trigger the pancreas. How is your little one doing now? |
