PLEASE HELP- Unusual urine smell here goes, for the past two days Jack's pee has a foul odor to do. Yes I know urine doesn't smell like roses, but this is a new smell, almost oniony? Also while scratching his belly I noticed a small lump inside his penis. He does go to the bathroom frequently but I do leave him out water for his leisure. I am very worried, have a vet appointment in 2 weeks, wondering if I should have him seen sooner or if his mommy is just being a worry wart. |
I would take in a urine sample and have them do a urinalysis if this was mine as they will test if crystals and ph to see if anything is going on and due to lump you found i would get him in sooner as well - if no lump i would just take in urine |

Can you get him into the vet sooner than two weeks? It might be something that needs treatment. Keep us posted. |
what is the protein percentage on food you are feeding? High protein can lead to stones |
I agree with dwerten and dunny. I would also suggest calling your vet and taking in a urine sample. Please keep us updated on Jack - I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. |
Thank you, I actually just noticed the lump is gone? Ive never had a male dog before, my baby is only 3 months old. I feed him wellness puppy dry food mixed with science diet small bites for puppies (he was on it before the wellness). I also give him wellness sweet pot. and lamb wet food. Little sticker only likes the lamb! |

If he's only 3 months old, he probably will need to go pee frequently for a while yet. He's still just a baby. If the urine odor was a sudden change and is that noticeable, I really think you should ask your vet about it. It may be as simple as a change in his diet. But don't let online strangers try to play doctor and diagnose a pup they've never seen and whose medical histories they know nothing about. Only you and your vet really know your pup, and this is the best way for your pup to get the proper diagnosis and care he needs for any condition that may develop. |
I think it is great that you are trying to educate yourself and seeking information out when you notice something different in your dog it is important for pet owners to be involved in the care of their pet and to learn things as well and why we have this section here to help each other as some pet owners have learned from experiencing things and can help pass that on to others and why we have this section which is so valuable here. I think it is common sense to all here to seek a vets advice as well and why we all have vets. If you don't have a vet and have a dog that seems pretty ridiculous to me. I think it is insulting to people to just say over and over go to the vet as if pet owners do not know this already and why some people leave yt when being told that when seeking out other pet owners help with their dog here. We all know to consult a vet we are not stupid. But we come here to learn from other dog owners experiences and recommendations. If the urine odor was a sudden change and is that noticeable, I really think you should ask your vet about it. It may be as simple as a change in his diet. But don't let online strangers try to play doctor and diagnose a pup they've never seen and whose medical histories they know nothing about. I really appreciate your help Dwerten. I have to agree that all pet owner do know to go to the vet (or at least one should hope!) =) My poor pup has had many hurdles for him already and I appreciate and welcome all opinions of medical and of course non medical issues. Not even a Vet knows everything - as I have come to find out the hard way. I have actually found the best place for information can be from other dog owners. I have grew up around poodles for most my life and owning a Yorkshire Terrier is something I am still learning about. I had his brother pass away this month and I worry very much about him. This is a Yorkie Forum... right? This is a sick/injured emergencies talk? Questions are allowed and different answers as well. I think the part about "online strangers playing vet" was a bit out of line, but you both gave me good information so I thank you for that. I am going to monitor his urine for the next 24 hours and see what happens, if not I am going to call my Vet tomorrow. |
Actually I dont see anything wrong with someone telling the Op to go to the vet. They are the ones that should be diagnosing they are the ones qualified too. I understand some pet owners may have some knowledge of a certain illness or sickness because there pet may have had it and they should share that but no one on here should be diagnosing a problem. I disagree with you Chachi, the Vet is the obvious answer. Some people like to get other opinions, perhaps people with similar issues and what their Vet said. There is nothing wrong with getting other opinions. Most vets do not know a lot about nutrition. I have been through 3 vets already, trying to find a good one- there have been times when a proper diagnosis was not given and meds were given in hopes to cure whatever it was. When my puppies were coughing and sneezing, two different vets told me it could be a couple different things, we try one treatment and if it didn't work we'd go from there. It just frustrates me when people think vets are gods, I'm dropping it now but I'll say this If anyone has a good vet then they are lucky. |

All said I think we all have good intentions. Our love for yorkies makes us a little more passionate than most. To the OP I hope all is well with your little one. |
To the OP... I hope you are able to take away some guidance. Sorry, I have none to give but I hope your little one is okay. So sad to see the 'rest' of the thread :( |

If i was wrong about post from Bon Bon i apologize i just got the same post pm me from someone in her yorkie rescue yesterday so found that a coincidence and it did not sit well with me and another owner came here seeking help and left mad as all she got was go see a vet and i do not want to see new members leaving because no one wants to offer help in sick and injured section if they have experience with what that owner is experiencing because they are not vets - NONE OF US ARE VETS we are trying to help with what we have experienced with our own dogs and trying to give information. Don't ask if you are afraid of what it might be as alot of things have similar symptoms and needs to be narrowed down and consulted with a vet but there is nothing wrong with others trying to help them narrow down along with them and offer information and support. While I appreciate prayers, comfort and caring I most importantly want INFORMATION and other experienced yorkie owners to help in narrowing things down so i can review with my vet or specialist. I think this is what other owners want as well when they post here and attacking one another is not helping anyone. If you read below we all in one way or another said to see a vet but we did not put down other members on the group trying to help others and that was my point. We can agree to disagree and that is fine as we will not all agree all of the time as health is a complex issue but we are all here because we care about our dogs and other dog owners that are trying to get help. If we all become so paranoid about helping then what good is this section going to be - we might as well get rid of it and say if your dog is sick GO SEE A VET which most people do anyway. I just think there are alot of intelligent knowledgeable people here and we should try to get along and if you disagree say you disagree and show back up information and not put others down or name call as that is not going to help anyone. so again I apologize if I have offended anyone as my intention is due to having sick dogs to help others with sick dogs. I am on 64 dog groups and read alot and on several vet groups and have vets that are very helpful so i try to help others with that information. sorry to op for this getting out of control as well |
WOW is all I can say! I am not going to defend myself here. I just saw this thread and was reading it when along came my user ID in a less than flattering manner. Looks like someone's brain was doing some OT. I will let the gods figure this one out. I have no desire to be the other part of the tango with someone who wants to be negative. This is all about helping the PUPS! :) To the OP: I hope your pup is ok! |
Just an update- called the Vet, he told me that it could just be the food I am feeding him and if it continues through the weekend to bring him in on Monday. He said if there are no crystals or blood in the urine he probably would not worry. I will play it by ear, my little man has been through enough. Thanks to everyone for your help. (Hate to see Petland ads and ads for "teacup yorkies" by google above this....HMPH) |
Im just going to throw something stupid out there, but when Laci used to use pads , one time I bought these pads that had some sort of an attractant in it, they smelled soooooooo foul after she peed on them and they were wet it was almost gagging.. It smelled like a old dirty diaper. Im just wondering if by chance you got a different kind of pee pad, if so read it and see if that is the case.. I ended up throwing them away because they had that same oniony type smell!! Just a simple thought:confused: |

I wanted to let everyone know that upon Jack's Vet visit, he clarified that Jack does not have a UTI- he even double-checked his bladder with ultrasound. I was very relieved. |
